I was going to ask why they didn't take Bernard if they were going to draft a back, but apparently he was already off the board... to Cincinatti? That's a kick in the plums.

I actually don't mind that Bell pick. Lacy dropped hard, questions about his ethic, passion, and possible injury looks to have tanked his rankings throughout teams.

Lacy obviously must have some character issues that came out

The biggest question about Bell is his initial burst, but he is one of the most versatile players in this draft. He has great patience, vision and power between the tackles, and can run over defenders and make them miss. In the passing game, he is an above-average route-runner who can line up in the slot, split wide or release out of the backfield. Bell is also an excellent overall pass blocker.

Bell was the entire MSU offense last year.

Thanks for the insider article. I thought the nfk network crew was going on about him not being that good in that regard

He didn't get much practice at it because MSU just ran the ball with him last year and didn't bother throwing because Maxwell was sub-Tino.

Andrew Maxwell: 2606 yards, 52.5% completion, 5.84 (!!!) YPA, 13 TD, 9 INT, 21 sacks
Tino Sunseri: 3288 yards, 65.1% completion, 8.37 YPA, 21 TD, 3 INT, 38 sacks

Amazingly enough, if you would have offered MSU fans a straight swap of Tino for Maxwell they'd have taken it gladly.

Numbers alone don't tell the story of Tino, at least not those numbers... But I have to say that there is enough disparity to classify Maxwell as Sub-Tino.

Because I'm a sadist I started looking at MSU's offensive numbers last year. Their QB was 109th in YPA and Passer Rating out of 116 qualified QBs. Their leading receiver was tied for 206th in receiving yards nationally. Bell carried the ball 382 times; Sparty as a whole ran the ball 492 times. (This is why Bell was smart to get out after his junior year.) In total Bell was 41% of Sparty's offense.

I was worried about how many carries Bell had last year. Back in 2008 Football Outsiders looked at college workload. For backs drafted in the 1st round it didn't seem to matter a whole lot, but up until that point the only back drafted after the first round who had 330+ carries that ended up being good was Herschel Walker (who was an unusual case). In the article they mention that it remains to be seen how Ray Rice, Matt Forte and Michael Turner will do since they had 330+ workloads...and they've all succeeded. Rice was a part time back his first year in the NFL before becoming the lead back. Turner spent 4 years as LdT's backup before becoming the man in Atlanta. Forte was thrown into the fire immediately in Chicago.

Just looking, it appears Bell was more impressive in gym shorts. Honestly, I know its just shorts, but the fact the big powerful back Bell was #1 in cone drill has to be impressive.

Also yea, it looks like Bell WAS the entire Michigan state offense.

While only a 5.0 ypc average, it looks like MSU relied on Bell more so than Pitt even did shady (which can tell with all the more carries). I'm guessing he faced similar stacked d's (shady had 4.8 ypc)

Is regarded as more of a character / work ethic guy than Lacy.

Apparently he's a quick big back who can catch well, but his vision sucks which prevents him from breaking big ones

Kind of funny though, I was watching his highlights and I noticed a TON of spins. Then in the "negative" section of scouting report I saw that he sometimes spins too often when he should use his size. LOL at Mendy-scorn Pittsburgh freaking out when he does that

I don't see any teams lining up to take Mathieu early. If the Steelers took a chance on him at 150, which is derp into the 5th round, then whatever.

I think someone takes him today. I was really hoping the Cowboys would take him at the end of the first round.

69th overall by the Cardinals.

Not bad Roc.

The big questions... Can he hold onto the ball and has he heard Bin Laden's side of the story?

4 fumbles last year which doesn't seem too bad given how often he carried and how he generally was thrown right into the middle of the line. It sounds like he doesn't always carry the ball tightly which is fixable. He's dealt with Sparty fans who are pretty horrible and not too far from being Al-Qaida members.

Haha, his twitter account appears to be more mature than Antonio Brown and Pouncey, but not quite the "amateur philosopher" accounts that Baron Batch and Mendy "bless" us with

I'm pretty sure most 14 year olds would display more maturity than most professional athletes.

B.W. Webb would look great in black and gold. Impenetrable secondary with him and Ike.
