definitely agree with this. they need to start building and replacing old players. the more picks, the better, especially in a draft that doesn't seem to have any big time superstars at skilled positions.

Matt Williamson sold me a bit on Tyler Eifert a bit. He wouldn't be my preferred pick, but I can see the rationale if he is selected. Miller is injured and could miss roughly the first half of the season, and he's only signed through next season. Eifert is a TE in the same mold as Miller and in the range of the 17th pick he's the closest player to a "guarantee". Will Jarvis Jones be able to transition to a 3-4 defense? Can Vaccaro become a Polamalu-like safety (remember the growing pains Troy had his rookie season)? If the Steelers take Eifert they've got their starting TE for the next 8 seasons. It wouldn't be a splash, exciting pick, but I can understand why they would take him.

That being said, I would still rather a defensive player.

I would prefer trading down as well, the problem is that there doesn't appear to be any teams that want to trade up. No team is in love with any one player and all seem to be content to go for the best value at their respective position. There just isn't any standout players this year. Lots of future starters, very few future Pro Bowlers.

I think its a more of a "don't want to go from gamechanger to scrub" situation.

Eifert is a de-facto wr. Ben is gonna need all the weapons he can get. The o-line finally looks to be shored up and now there's huge question marks about the pass catchers. Heath is out til mid-season. Can AB transition to the #1 wr full time? Sanders is hurt a lot, and Plex/Cotchery are quality veterans but they aren't gonna set the world on fire. I have a feeling the Steelers will never take him though.

I am on the side of "I will angrily rage" if we select Eifert.

Seeing the recent success with finding wideouts in the 3rd on, I'd doubt the Steelers take a WR in the first or second.

I won't rage if they draft Eifert because I think he's a good player, but I won't be happy about it if they pass up Jarvis Jones to take Eifert.

it's tricky, because Eifert is probably the closest thing to a "sure thing" we're going to get at our draft position this season, but i still don't think TE is nearly as big a position of need as LB, WR, or safety. I'd like to see a LB or safety taken first, but I'd rather take Eifert than stretch on a player to fill a position, i guess.

They don't need him, they brought back Matt Spaeth.

****. thanks for reminding me. :face:

Now that we brought back Gay and Spaeth, are there any other crappy backups we kicked to the curb looking for work?

Not necessarily a backup, but I'm sure Jeff Reed would show up within 15 minutes if you called him.

I wouldn't put it past the NFL or ESPN to somehow make this into a 7 day event at some point.

Seriously, it wouldn't surprise me if the next step was to make it into a 4 day event.

Round 1: Thursday
Rounds 2-3: Friday
Rounds 4-5: Saturday
Rounds 6-7: Sunday

Only if they leave Jarvis Jones on the table. Lacey does have game breaker ability.

No reason to waste a first round pick on a running back.
