Local legends, myths, etc.

Postby Hockeynut! on Mon Apr 08, 2013 9:41 am

My newest passion is researching local legends and myths. We all know the big ones (the guy and girl on a date who get attacked by the escaped mental patient with the hook hand, a crazy family in the woods that kill and eat trespassers, etc), but the more regional ones are what I find really interesting. Some are based on real facts while others are completely made up and figuring out which is which is half the fun. I'm actually trying to compile a list of these types of legends so if anyone would care to share some stories, I'd really appreciate it! - Thanks!

Have you checked out the "Weird" series of books?

I have the two NJ books and the one on the Carolinas.

Ever been to old Torrance state hospital? Livermore is up there too. The story of Livermore goes that they used to always experience flooding, so they made a damn for the Connemaugh river, and in doing so flooded the town of Livermore. They say you can still see the church steeples sticking out of the water if its low enough

Also, close to where my aunt and uncle used to live on Long Island, the King's Park Psychiatric Facility. We've driven through here before, and the main building is one of the most imposing, threatening buildings I've seen. Supposed to be quite haunted:

"Green Man's Tunnel" in South Park/Library. Man gets struck by lightning, becomes disfigured. Glows green. Walks roads late at night. Lives in tunnel. Drive into tunnel, beep horn 3 times, Green Man comes out, but he wants you to give him beer.

On Jan. 31, 1956, a B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the Monongahela River near the Glenwood Bridge in Homestead. Despite 14 days of search efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Army Corps of Engineers, no sign of the plane was ever found. To this day, the "Ghost Bomber" crash remains one of Pittsburgh's most legendary mysteries.

This is awesome - thanks for all of the leads so far! I've been to Livermore and Burkittsville. Lots of the others are new to me though. Did you know that the "Green Man" was a real guy? I found a pic of him online once. He was electrocuted and it burned his face off so they gave him a face mask like Richard in Boardwalk Empire. Everyone said he was a really nice guy.

I've read about a place called the Murder Swamp around New Castle where they found dismembered body parts back in the 30s. Would love to check that out some time.

I've read most of the "Weird" books. Their PA edition focuses heavily on the eastern side of the state, unfortunately. I love reading about stuff like this.

If you're talking about Kecksburg, that's a great story. The town has a UFO festival in the summer but I've never been to it, haha.

"And she hit him in the head with a golf club!"

"So."

"Did I mention she was dead?"

"No."

"Well, she was. And remember, he went golfing all the time and it drove her crazy?"

"You said he went bowling."

"D'oh!"

Dixmont may have been demolished, but the 1300 plot cemetery remains along with all its ghosts.

It is weird in this day of instant media and everyone has a camera that these "UFO" crashes have ceased.

Oddly enough, I have been to the Gravity Hill in Moncton but not to the one in Bedford County, 25 miles from where I grew up.
