Windows 8 verus Windows 7

Postby sdadowski on Tue Apr 09, 2013 10:41 am

So I'm in the market for a new computer. I've used Windows forever so going Mac is not an option. But after reading horror stories reagrding WIndows 8, do I even think about buying a new machine with Windows 7? I feel like I'd be buying a new tv and settling for 720hd instead of 1080...

Anyone use Windows 8 and have any reccommendations?
Thanks

I've screwed around with Win 8 on my netbook for about a year and a half now. It really is geared towards the tablet/convertible pc market. Id say I spend 80% of my time on it using Windows XP, 15% using Linux, 5% using Win8.

As a new OS there are still issues - mainly drivers - that are not up to date, but if you are buying an off the shelf machine I guess that's a bit negated. Some of the other programs I personally use on my htpc have not been updated to full support Win 8 yet either.

What type of computer are you looking for? If I were buying an off the shelf system I think it would be a Surface Pro. I'll never buy another desktop. Too easy to build your own with much higher quality components and no bloatware.

There will be a lot of growing pains with Windows 8. Just as there are with most every new operating system.

Microsoft is all-in and devoted to unified visual experience across all platforms (desktop PC, tablet, Xbox, phone). Yes, Windows 8 is designed with a touch interface in mind and will be completely foreign to the uninitiated. But there is no going back. The days of the desktop PC are numbered. Microsoft isn't going to come to some stark realization and go back to the traditional Windows experience. It just isn't going to happen.

My professional advice is to go with Windows 8 and try to embrace it with an open mind.

Have and use both, don't really mind either one. I seem to use 7 more for anything work related while 8 appears to be goto messing around at home.

If you have a choice, go 7.

8 would be fine if they would have left the old 7 interface alone, instead of forcing one to pin the regular programs on the taskbar.

I was kind of shocked that Win 7 wasn't even an option from the major manufacturers (HP, Dell). I was buying (or suggesting) laptops for relatives, and Win 8 was the only option. It seemed that XP was an option for several years after Vista and Win 7 came out, but I could be wrong.

I know a friend of mine "upgraded" his gaming PC to Win 8 and couldn't get audio drivers that worked for his sound card or motherboard sound, rendering it useless. Imma gonna hold off on that sort of upgrade for a while. I'll be hopefully building a new PC this summer, and I have a copy of Win 7 Pro tucked away for just such a project.

I want one of these so bad. I just need to find a spare $900.00.
