Anybody handy with audio components?

Postby HomerPenguin on Tue Apr 09, 2013 1:29 pm

I had to take down my home theater setup so we could put in new carpet. As I was reconnecting my subwoofer, Yamaha YST-SW216, I heard a loud rattle coming from inside the unit. Thinking I had somehow broken it, I tried to look through the port to see if I could get some idea what was in there. What I found was up to 5 years of who-knows-what that my daughter and any number of other children had put into the port. Trying to move the subwoofer around to get the stuff to come back out the port, needless to say, didn't work. I feel like I should unscrew the back plate and try to go in that way to get the stuff out, but I don't even know if that's possible or how great the risk of destroying the subwoofer is. I would rather have a subwoofer with a few unimportant things rattling around inside it than have no subwoofer at all. Can anybody offer me some advice?

I worked as an A/V tech back in college. So long as you don't yank out any wiring or poke a hole in the cone or anything like that, I don't think opening up the cabinet would cause any damage.

Took me about 24 hours of intense internal struggle to back away from that crack for adults site. Jeez, the 'Show me your Subwoofer" section was a few hours alone of wtf goodness.

I took the path of least resistance and tried letting the culprit fish the stuff out of there since her hands could still fit through the port (with the unit unplugged, of course). Problem solved.

1/2 of the problem solved....the culprit is still roaming freely. :pop:

True, but she's older now. I was going to say "older and wiser" but that's a crapshoot.
