We'll see if he signs somewhere. He could easily go unsigned and it would be because he isn't that good and this won't be different from a player retiring and then coming out. The timing was not ideal for this, but i'm guessing he just did it as soon as he felt comfortable doing it.

Major professional sports is essentially the last arena to acknowledge homosexuality. Even the military acknowledged it existed in its culture before pro sports. It will be a story until a handful of guys follow suit.

I know a gay person or two, and they are like most women and find me unattractive.

I'm surprised it's someone from the NBA. I would've bet money on it being someone from the NHL or MLB before football or basketball

Something like this is very important, because there are many young gay athletes, who can now say (at least to themselves), "It's ok to be who I am."

I would have bet on basketball before anything else, then baseball, then football and hockey.

I'm with stopper. I'm quite surprised it was the NBA that has the first openly gay athlete.

Haven't there been more than a few instances where players have used a slur against gay people on the court? I would google it, but being at work and having to explain why I was looking for that word....probably not a good idea.

The NBA is the most modern of any of the 4 major American sports leagues.

Just wish it was someone more prominent /talented and more than 50% likely to be on a roster next year.

Wasn't the NBA was the first professional sport to deal with HIV and the AIDS epedimic scare with Magic Johnson? I am sure the league can handle a (non)issue like this.

Boooo! Another media gay celebration! I don't care if you are gay or not. I am so sick of this gay crap being all over the media. It's everywhere. 4% of the population is gay, yet you see one on so many TV shows and it's so sensationalized.

If you are gay, fine be gay. But it is not something to be so proud of, IMO.

All the same, Patrick Burke is asking people to stop bashing him on Twitter.

The NFL, even though it has 2 of the most vocal advocates, will be dead last. I see the NHL or MLB being next.

NFL has now officially overtaken the NBA as being the #1 sport filled with scumbags and thugs. Such a worthless league.

Do you have anyone very close to you that have struggled with their sexuality and acceptance not only of that sexuality through others, but through themselves as well? If you do, you realize why gay rights are so important.
