there will be a 5 mile back up regardless as there are old world practitioners of merging and new world practitioners of merging

And that works best when you use both lanes to the merge point, otherwise the zipper gets sloppy and choas ensues.

if everyone merged at the end then both lanes would move

No, because the people in the blocked lane would have to slow down to a virtual stop until someone in the moving lane slowed down to let them in.

It's perfectly possible to keep traffic moving if everyone merges before they reach the merge point. You keep everyone moving at relatively the same speed. You don't have to worry about one lane having to slow to let people in the other lane through.

No, there would be an accident. The longer the merge distance is spread out, the less of a slow down you will experience. You maximize the slow down by having everyone merge at one point.

whereas if they use the zipper merge there's a 2.5 mile backup instead of 5 mile.

it's a tricky question. if there's an established line of cars in a single lane standing still, i'll merge before i get to said line. if traffic's moving, i'll wait.

while yes, if everyone just drove normal until the merge point things would move more quickly, that's not how people operate in real life, so you wait in line with everyone else. you don't be that guy who is by himself cutting ahead of a ton of cars standing still.

I look to merge after the first sign is spotted.

Once in the lane and I come across the merge point, I let one person in.

i'm sure you usually find a spot to weasel your way into line with ease, but do you get upset at those times when you're stuck and people won't let you in front of them?

I dont agree with this. It could create a weaving action, or zipper if you will. There is no reason why there should be a stop.

How about people in a long single line that ride the center line; I take that as a challenge to pass.

yep. i also straddle both lanes once i hit a certain point. same deal on airplanes - my legs block the aisle once we land. the back rows aren't getting off the plane before the fornt rows, folks.

If all the cars are in a single line, and you can't see the merge point, u are doing it wrong.

Yeah, once I hit the dashed lines, if I see someone coming up to pass, i'm either straddling both lanes or completely back over in the merge lane.

This. Note that while the “zipper merge” page from the Minnesota Department of Transportation says that form of merging reduces overall length of backup and “creates a sense of fairness,” it nowhere says that the zipper merge is faster.

I had someone ignored and can't figure out why. :pop: Everytime I read a quoted post of theirs they seemed far more reasonable than most of the posts I was reading. I may have gone overboard at one time.

I merge relatively early, then do everything in my power to prevent the nimrods that wait til the last second from actually getting in the lane.
