Insect and Anti Stink Bug People

Postby JeffDFD on Wed May 01, 2013 10:51 am

Ok so these stink bugs are starting to come back into full force, but this is really a question for LGP's insect people.

Apparently, the Praying Mantis will eat these little stinky jerks. You can buy Praying Mantis egg sacs on Amazon. Does anyone have any experience in this area at all? I always thought the Mantis was a cool looking dude and if he eats stink bugs, why not spend 7-8 bucks and have some around the house?

Anyone have any thoughts/comments?

Example on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Praying-Mantis-Eg ... 000MR7B26/

Why would you want to buy stink bug egg sacs?

:pop:

But seriously, why not try it? Mantis' are good for all kinds of pest management.

(This is better than my original thought to suggest you ask JeffDFD in his thread)

Ha, edited that.

Well, this is what JeffDFD would have possibly suggested as an answer, but I was wondering if anyone has ever bought insects like this for any reason. Or maybe someone has advice if you do buy...or maybe the eggs you buy are a scam and will never hatch...etc etc.

Was the Praying Mantis not endangered a while ago (or are they still in any way)? Selling eggs like this just seems weird. Does some guy out there have a Mantis farm and takes all the eggs and sells them?

Hah...when we were looking at our new home, I was actually taking a VERY close look to see if I noticed stink bugs. It is a legitimate quality of life issue. I've been killing a couple a week lately.

I found a praying mantis in my yard last summer so that might explain why I hardly have any stink bugs.

oh hey bugs

re: the mantids, this could/should work. the problem is they are usually localized to a certain area (ie - good for protecting a garden). a home may be difficult if you have multiple points of infiltration.

ive had success with a home made trap that consists of cutting a 2 liter bottle in half near the part where the top becomes widest. take a flashing LED strobe light and place it in very bottom. take the top, turn it upside down and stick in like a funnel to the light. those stupid bugs flock to the light like a magnet and turns in to a mass grave

I have traps as well...doing very little. The bugs love my warm sun room.

I may try the mantis thing...because even if hey don't eat a ton of stink bugs...they are still awesome to watch.

Just wonder if buying them off amazon will work

Oh yeah, sun rooms are the absolute worst when it comes to stink bugs.

I put them in the trees or hooks about 15-20 yards away from my house. I have yet to see one on my house...as of now. There were about 25-30 in the trap that was on the tree.

I saw a truck this morning with a logo "Stink Bug Master" or something like that.
