It's impossible to balance a condescending persona with anything yinzer.

shafnutz05 wrote:Yinz is one thing I have never gotten. I tend to be a Yinzer (used to be really bad during Steelers games, but I've found myself becoming more detached in recent years), but I've never even been inclined to use "Yinz" in conversation. It sounds awkward to me.

Actually, I always say things like "that car needs washed", leaving out the "to be". Pretty sure that is a western PA/yinzer thing.

This is me, too. During my high school years I actively worked to rid myself of my Yinzer accent, and now my accent is a mish-mash of "non-regional diction" and a sort of northern Jersey-speak. (A lot of my friends are from there, so I've sorta picked up their accent over time.) Honestly, I think the only word that I still pronounce with any sort of Yinzerism is dahntahn. And I work with a guy from Homestead (or thereabouts), so when we are watching the Pens or Stillers on TV we both tend to say 'jagoff' a lot.

That said, my mom is still Yinzer through and through. So when I speak to her, it's usually no more than 5 or 6 minutes before I start dropping Ls and adding Ws in their place.

My parents are southern and I didn't realize that my mom has a sugary sweet southern accent, until I went to college.
How I did not pick up on that, amongst the yinzer accents in the Sahth Hills, remains a mystery.

hating fireworks is a good indication you are a self loathing yinzer.

hating light up night, fourth of july fireworks, or st patricks day celebrations are also good indications

I think it's a Pennsylvania thing in general. I get called out for it all the time here and I'm from Schuylkill County.

I don't have the local fireworks obsession, but I don't really care about it.

Light up night I like because I'm a sucker for Christmas.

St. Patrick's Day was fun when I was younger, but I avoid it now. Don't really have a problem with it.

I was walking through the Yale campus a few years ago before attendng a Jonny Lang concert up there and the college aged couple walking in front of me were talking. I could tell immediately from his accent that he was from Pittsburgh.

I excused myself for interrupting and asked him what part of Pittsburgh he was from... the answer?

Spoiler:
Turtle CrICK :)

There is little better than running into someone from Pittsburgh outside of the Pittsburgh area, particularly if more than a few hundred miles.

Haha yea i bartended at the VFW one summer, that's great, the patrons usually buy you a shot, or buy you a beer, when buying them for everyone else. Also getting 10% of all the tip boards and strip tickets sold was awesome too, especially on weekends around payday.
