Thinking of switching to Direct TV..

Postby pens9192 on Mon Jun 10, 2013 2:31 pm

I pay $86 a month for Digital Preferred and $50 a month for Blast Internet from Comcast. I also use Tivo and that is $13 a month. That is just too much money to spend a month for TV, IMO. We use the Internet and Netflix more than watch TV, but still use TV for Pens games, Disney Junior and Nick Junior for the kids, AMC, A&E, and Network channels. Plus our current Tivo box is having some problems and this our fourth box having troubles in two years. I'm just tired of dealing with them.

I was looking at Direct TV and I am impressed at what they are offering. I can get pretty much the same channels (plus Disney Junior and Nick Junior in HD which Comcast doesn't offer) for $50 a month ($70 a month after the 1st year) plus their Genie DVR seems impressive and is a big upgrade to my Tivo Premiere by offering more than double the HD recording capacity and double the tuners. Plus the ability to stream to other TV's.

I don't think DISH is an option because they don't offer Disney Junior. That is non-negotiable in my house. Gotta love kids :)

Here are my questions:

- Is Direct TV worth it? Is the Genie DVR any good?
- If I cancel my Comcast TV service, will my Internet only price remain the same? (Have to stick with Comcast, can't get Fios or DSL)

I have DirecTV for a few years now and have had no issues. I don't have the genie, but have their DVR's and they work fine. You just have to learn to negotiate with them once your freebies run out.

Your comcast will go up in price if you only have them for internet. Mine jumped a good bit when I ditched them for TV and kept internet only. My work pays my internet bill though so I don't worry about it.

Your internet price will go up to at least $65ish if prices are similar in your area. They discount it when you get another service. If the pricing is anything like City of Pittsburgh it will be cheaper for you to subscribe to basic cable AND internet than just internet.

I will be cancelling my expanded cable this week - I only pick it up in the winter for hockey season, and we know thats over.

Been with DirecTV for 13 years. Had DVR service for almost 9 years. You will not regret it.

The only thing we haven't done is the HD-TiVo upgrade (running Hughes Series 2 TIVo boxes, which are SD), as we've so much stored that we need to be able to watch the stuff already recorded even if they would no longer be receiving new content (and we don't want to put receivers in the kids rooms). That and the HD requires a separate dish. SD has its limitations on 39 & 40 inch HDTVs, but if you are at the back of the room, it's not bad. Well, liveable anyway.

That's about where I'm at. Whole home DVR, I have two tv's with the HD DVR receivers, and one with just normal HD box(3 TV's all together). I think I'm at like 105 or 110$ a month. It's not bad. Never had bad service from them, and very rarely does the signal go out.

Yeah, the only time my signal has gone out, my power has also gone out shortly thereafter. So, it's a moot point. I justified it by the savings in the first year. I totaled the amount I'd pay over the length of the 2 years, averaged it out to a per-month cost, and it was still cheaper (not to mention a LOT better) than cable

I got directv for the free Sunday ticket to watch every Pats game and its been great. Never had an issue with the dish going out. Thought it would during hurricane sandy but held strong. I pay about $100 a month, which is worth not supporting Ed Snider and Comcast.

The 5 tuners in the genie is invaluable.

Thanks for the replies.

I see I am offered a promotion for the Blast Internet tier for $35 for six months. That is one tier above what I have now that is $51 a month. If I choose that promotion now and then two months from now switch to Direct TV and lower my Comcast TV service to Basic, will I still keep that $35 promotion price for Blast?

Just curious, does anyone have Dish? I know they don't carry Disney Junior but I configured an order online and picked one of the packages that gives you an iPad 2 and the monthly price for close to the same channels as Direct TV was $25 more expensive a month plus $81 due when I ordered. Is there any reason to consider Dish? Does DIsh prices raise after one year as well? Their website says it was an everyday low price.

Tv, Internet, phone. It looks like they just send you to other companies like AT&T to do the non tv stuff though.

As of last summer, they had a partnership with Verizon for an internet and phone bundle.

I've had DirecTv for 13 years and love it. Always had great service or if there was a glitch, customer service went above and beyond to make me happy.

I now have a friend who works for DirecTV and I swear, she just posted this on her facebook today. Do with it what you will, but it is 100% legit. Not sure if the link will work, but I'll try.

Me neither. Been with them for many years. Once in a while when there's a really huge giant kick-ass storm, will it go down for the duration, but probably overall not more than my Comcast internet when they're working on something.
