Scamming Season at Sheetz

Postby steve784 on Mon Jun 10, 2013 8:29 pm

Sheetz, GetGo, whatever.....

Twice now in the last month at different gas stations in Cranberry I've been approached by two separate individuals, both with very detailed and sad stories that inevitably end in them needing like $20 to get out of a jam. Found out from a coworker one of them that matched a description I gave to him has been there multiple times doing the same thing. Pathetic that people stoop to this, because in that 1 out of 100 situation where the person could actually use the help I won't be giving it.

A guy did that to me at the BP in Canonsburg a few years ago. I kindly said I don't have cash and got in my car.

The level of detail in the story I got today was borderline impressive.

I've heard of things like that involving breaking a $50 or $100 into smaller denominations. The bills will of course be counterfeit.

This happened once at Sam's club. Guy said he was out of gas, forgot his wallet at Walmart and just needed $5 to pump some gas to get there.

I did give him the cash, and the only reason was because his two kids were in the car crying.

Heh. I was going into Sheetz yesterday in Somerset and some middle aged guy with a southern accent asked me if there were any "head shops" in the area.

Lol, yinz guys wouldn't last a second in a major city. Ignore it and move on, what's the issue?

I've heard stories ranging from their girlfriend dumping them and needing a subway token to get to their friends house, to someone saying that they need 5 dollars in order to pay off a parking fine or they'll go to prison. The stories range from the dull to the creative and detailed. They're very good at what they do usually, but it's almost always false.

There was one lady in Oakland a few years ago who needed money for gas for her car so she could drive to the Hill District to get her baby who was locked in the backseat of another car.

I go to the shell in wilkinsburg some guy asked for 5 bucks to clean my windshield. I gave him a 20 spot. He said he would use his special spray to make it nice and clean. It didn't work.

Some guy came up to me in the south hills village mall parking lot begging me for 20 dollars to catch a few buses to get home. He offered me a 20 dollar GetGo gift card. I didn't have any cash on me and actually felt bad for the guy until he pointed out an atm down the road. I just walked away from the guy after that. Scumbag knew what he was doing.

So we should rightfully get furious when asked to donate a dollar by some cashier to Children's Miracle Network, but shouldn't be bothered by some deadbeat trying to scam us?

Approached in the hill at least 9 or 10 times a year at Pens games. Sometimes the same guy or woman twice. I just give my best Geno impersonation and say "no english".

I usually tell them no, but if they have a a really good story with lots of detail, I'll give them a few bucks for the entertainment and I will tell them I know they are full of it, but enjoyed their story.

A guy hit my old lady up for money a few years back. She said she didn't have any and said "Want to find an ATM?"

P.S. Sheetz burritos with pico de gallo are fantastic.
