I wonder if she listened to Chris Rock's last HBO special when he laid out the specific instance(s) that this sort of language is ok. I believe it was the Toys R Us parking lot on Christmas Eve though, not a bank.

i don't really get why the N word would be used as an exclamatory response to being robbed at gun point or whatever - especially when you're telling someone about it later. it's not like calling someone a jerk or an A-hole. it's not even like calling someone a f*g.

But all the n-----s use it. I mean, all the blacks use it. I mean, all the African American's use it, so we should be allowed to use it too!

I wonder, if Emeril Lagasse were throwing around the "c word", if people would say it was wrong for Crest to fire him. ;)

It's not the word. It's the racist ***hole behind it that makes it so.

What about when Eminem used it in one of his songs. He is friends with a lot of black people and is really tight with Dre. In the one song he even said he would die for Dre.

I'll just point out... if Paula Deen is in fact a racist, she is the most innocuous and irrelevant racist of all time.

And for the record, it's not that "white people really want to be able to use that word". It's the gigantic double standard placed on the issue.

i think that picture should be labled

"admitted to using a racial slur, and planned a blatantly racist themed party, as well as got sued for various other forms of harassment/contract not renewed"

"made a joke about a character he played in a movie/etc etc etc"

what about it? if black people are generally ok with it, it's fine. if they're not - it's not fine. it's not up to white people to set the standards on which racial slurs are acceptable and in what context.

I don't even know who she is. Well, I do now, but I've never seen her before. (shrug)

I think if you use that word on TV, they're going to fire you and you should know that. So whatever.

Addendum: What if I have a black friend that doesn't mind it, but we are within hearing distance of another black person and I'm not sure how they feel about it?

Wait a second. It wasn't live on TV? Just in private life? I really don't feel like reading the whole article. But that changes things somewhat. Still, I think the network has a right to fire her since they don't want to have any ties to a person like that. It would hurt their business.

is it wrong to use the N word in front of a group of black strangers? i think the answer is pretty obvious

She was fired because she has brought bad press to her company. First off she created a firestorm by hiding her diabetes while talking about how great sugar filled sugar covered fried lard balls were. Strike One. Then she made it worse by parlaying her unhealthiness and striking up a deal to be the spokesman for Viktoza, bringing more bad press to the company. Strike Two. Then she admits freely to using the N-word during a discrimination trial. Strike Three.

Why is it such an outrage that Food Network doesn't want her back. Its not like she was a prized employee for the network. She's not Guy Fieri, she's not what Emeril Lagasse was. She's not even Bobby Flay or Robert Irvine. She had a 30 minute show at 4pm during weekdays which probably didn't have great ratings. The benefits she brought to Food Network are now clearly outweighed by the negatives.

I just want to point out that one being civilly sued for anything does not necessarily mean that one did it. I’m defending a suit right now where a former employee of a government agency is suing and claiming that his termination violated his constitutional rights, he was defamed in the process, there was a conspiracy against him, etc. Based on all of the evidence so far, my view is that he’s a tinfoil-hatted nutball and his claims are meritless, and I am fully confident my client will prevail. But there is a seven-count lawsuit out there claiming all of that stuff.

Question: What if, in response to that deposition question, Ms. Deen responded that she has never said the word out loud, but “I’ve thought it plenty of times.” Would she still be worthy of the treatment she is getting?
