treatment from her employer or from people like us?

the former isn't our call, but it would still make business sense to not renew her

the latter? yeah, probably. or at least comparable treatment. though i don't know exactly how you'd qualify our "treatment" of her.

And it was like 20 years ago.

Hurt their business? Isn't TV all about ratings? How many people tried to watch her show on Saturday only to find it was replaced?

$5 says she is already 10 chapters into the tell-all book about this...

If they felt it would help them to keep her, they would have. Obviously they didn't think the hassle was worth it, so they didn't renew her. Any bump they would have gotten would have disappeared within a week. At this point, she's one of many other "stars" on the network that they can just do without.

We've already seen how little black people under the age of 40 or 50 care about the N word. I would imagine as the civil rights generation dies off, it will become even less of a thing.

I'm fairly certain that the vast majority of black people, regardless of age, do not want to be called that word, no matter how much white people like to delude themselves that it's not a big deal and just a word or whatever.

As did Bill Maher.

As previously reported by NewsOne, Bill Maher also defended chef Paula Deen‘s use of the word “ni**er” by declaring it freedom of speech on par with Hip-Hop music.

“People shouldn’t have to lose their shows and go away when they do something bad,” said Maher. “It’s just a word. It’s a wrong word. She was wrong to use it. But do we always have to make people go away?”

Maher joins Dr. Boyce Watkins, who in an appearance on CNN’s AC360 argued that Deen’s age and environment should be taken into account when judging her; Maher also joins Roland Martin who argued that Black people should be just as upset when other Black people use the n-word as racist White people.

I definitely appreciate Al Sharpton's defense here, but there is another clear double standard. Sharpton was (is?) a nasty anti-Semite in the past, and actually incited a mob to murder a Jewish shop owner. Oh, and he also tarred and feathered a couple of whiteys that were falsely accused by Tawana Brawley of raping her.

Yet today, with ALL of these facts known, Al Sharpton is considered one of the foremost and respected commentators on black issues in the country today (maybe not by you, but by most of the media). Yet Paula Deen uses the N WORD once and makes some offhand comments about a slave themed wedding, and she is now the devil incarnate and permanently shunned. And again, I was never a Paula Deen fan.

I'm well aware of our nation's history in terms of civil rights, but there is only so far you can stretch the double standard so far.

Inciting an angry black mob to attack Jews that results in murder/endangering the lives of multiple innocent men <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< N WORD, apparently

News flash: Johnny Cash did NOT shoot a man in Reno.

I just want to punch people who bring up hip hop music in this context.

Some further context:

Deens’ attorney, Franklin, asked Jackson: “You have never heard Paula make a racist remark, have you?”

“Not heard it,” Jackson replied.

“You have never known Paula to discriminate against a person based on gender, have you?”

“I’m not aware.”

“And you have never known Paula to sexually harass anyone, have you?”

“Not me.”

Taken from Jackson's complete deposition:

Shaf, personally, I agree that all that is often overblown and that the whole thing with people getting fired all around is definitely creepy and that for the life of me I can't understand why rappers and black youth use that word so much. I am still not surprised she got fired over this and I would imagine same thing happening in most companies. You gotta be smarter than that when it comes to work.

So you have the same reaction to what someone says regardless of who says it.

I think for a lot of people the person saying something and the context within which they say it means pretty much everything.

You're cherry-picking a bit here. Permanently shunned? I'm pretty sure we don't know that yet, and I can almost guarantee that she'll land on her feet. Her Food Network job wasn't renewed... it's not that big a deal, in the grand scheme of things. And judging by social media, there are plenty of people who support her. In a year she'll have another cookbook out and probably be on TV somewhere else. I don't think her life will be over.

Local economic impact update:

I just had a beer with the couple upstairs, who both work in the local film/tv/commercial biz.
He was doing lighting at Paula Deen's house last week for some webisodes and they abruptly shut down production.

I’ve certainly said it, most likely in the context of racist jokes that were not uncommon when I was younger.
