US Cities Geography challenge

Postby count2infinity on Fri Aug 16, 2013 9:16 am

It's Friday, a nice little challenge to start the morning. Start here: http://maine.craigslist.org/

The challenge is to get from Maine to LA in as minimal number of clicks on the "Nearby CL" panel on the right as possible. Please no Googling or looking at CL's homepage where there's a map... how much of a pathetic loser do you have to be to pull up Google maps just to try and win a silly internet challenge?

Spoiler:
That last sentence is directed at you Shadrick...

Post your # of clicks and possibly the route you took. Heck, I might even throw in a prize for the winner. Like a real prize, not just an internet pat on the back.

This was a lot of fun (and no I didn't cheat)

Spoiler:
Maine -> Catskills -> Williamsport -> Western MD -> WV -> Southwest VA -> Knoxville -> Nashville -> North MS -> Texarkana -> Dallas -> San Antonio -> Odessa -> Albuquerque -> Phoenix -> LA

15 clicks....I think I did WAY too much of a southern swing, but I wasn't 100% confident that I was taking the shortest route possible cutting through the midwest. Basically just cut down to Texas and took I-10 straight out to LA. I only remembered Odessa is in western TX because someone I know is a newscaster down there.

I would almost think going a route that is relatively low in population would get you there faster as the CLs would be more spread out, but 15 clicks? well done shad.

It definitely helps, no doubt.

I got 12 going through Canada.

Spoiler:
Maine-->Montreal-->Ottawa-->Peterborough-->Sudbury-->Sault Ste Marie-->Thunder Bay-->Winnepeg-->Eastern Montana-->Wyoming-->Elko-->Sacramento-->LA

The only ones that I really didn't know were Elko, which I clicked because I thought the name was funny, but it got me to Sacramento, so it worked, and Sudbury which again, was just luck, but I recognized Sault Ste Marie from there.

There's a Bloomington in MN (where the Mall of America is, I saw Bloomington and thought "o sweet, Madison to basically MSP).. I guess Bloomington meant Indiana..

I am at an unfair advantage because I'm a Geographer, but I was able to do it 16 moves. Getting through the midwest is key.

I work in the oil and gas business. I feel like I'm one of the few people that followed their passion in life (college) and I'm lucky to have actually found a job in my desired field.

I was thinking, I wonder if Canada's the right way to go... Since the CL's might be more spread out. So I did a Canada, just to Detroit, and avoided my Bloomington confusion and got it in 13. Changed nothing else, almost same route and got it in 13 clicks. Interesting how 1 small change can knock off so much
