Car Window Tinting Recommendations

Postby TRazzy66 on Fri Aug 16, 2013 1:47 pm

I just bought a new car and I am thinking of getting some window tinting done. I know nothing about it but I was hoping someone knew of some good places to go.

Any recommendations of good places around Pittsburgh? Also, how much did you pay for a four door car? I know its illegal in PA but what is the highest percentage you can get on the car? Thanks so much for any help!

aren't they really strict in PA, like you need to have 70% light transmittance?

Google iz u frend: http://www.berksweb.com/users/dmv/tint/

But, I don't know how much the 70% rule is enforced. I see some very "dark" windows on a daily basis on the roads.

my gf recently had her car done and paid about $400 BUT she drives a Prius that has lots of little "extra" windows. don't forget to do your back window (5) and you might consider doing your windshield as well. for the windshield it's not that it's dark but it still blocks out the heat but maybe that's not a necessity in Pittsburgh like it is in Atlanta (except for this summer. the high today is 69. wtf?)

I live in Mt. Lebanon and the moment you tint your windows they pull you over and give you a ticket. I would advise you to not drive near there if you go this route.

My dad had a coworker (state police) that carried an ice scraper with him and forced people with illegal tints to scrape it off.

Its definitely illegal to have any windshiedl tint in PA. I'm pretty sure you'll get pulled over with that.

It's all about police safety in this state. That's why they're so strict.

I always thought it was if it was aftermarket, like if the car came that way from the manufacturer then it was OK?

Always depends on the tint level.

I miss the tint I had on my jeep. I think I'm gonna get tint on my subaru but only on the rear and back windows. No reason to do the fronts really.

My kids love the tint, little kids hate the direct sun in their face.

If it's from the manufacturer, then it's fine. If it's aftermarket, then you could catch some grief.

I have aftermarket tint on mine. Haven't caught any flack yet, but mine also looks like it's from the factory. It's not ridiculous dark like some idiots who keep their windows to the point where you can't even see through them.

My Sportage came with tinted windows. So it isn't "illegal". The very dark (black) tints are.

Ive had 18% all the way around (except the windshield of course) which is decently dark since 2007, got it put on a week after I bought the car, and never had a problem. Ive driven passed countless cop cars and sat beside them at traffic lights. My car is black too so that makes it look even darker. When its even a little bit overcast you cannot see in my car from the side at all (I guess I'm one of those idiots...but DANG does it look good!). I lived in NC before that and 18% was illegal down there too, but not "as illegal" (lol), and no problems. Got pulled over twice down there and cops didn't say anything.

It all boils down to the cop.. I dont think many will flash you strictly for tint but I guess some will. Ive already accepted that if I get a speeding ticket or something I'll likely have a tint fine to go along with it.

Spoiler:
For what its worth I think it looks incredibly bad to have the back windows tinted but not the front sides. Or to have backs darker than fronts period..

My buddy got pulled over by an a-hole cop that gave him a fine. My college roommate also got a fine and got it refunded when he went to the inspection shop and "proved" that he removed it.

When my wife bought an R-title vehicle, they had to do an enhanced safety inspection to apply for the new title (after salvaging/rebuilding it). They made her scrape it off before she passed. I think everywhere is different. Frankly, I just drive with my front windows down cause my truck is tinted, if I happen to see a cop. No problems yet (knocks on wood)
