E-cigs are as harmful as cigarettes

Postby Sam's Drunk Dog on Wed Aug 28, 2013 8:36 am

Electronic cigarettes contain carcinogenic chemicals that make some as harmful as normal tobacco, a new French study has claimed.
The report comes after government plans announced in May this year to ban electronic cigarettes from public places in France.

Calling Doc Emerick! Isn't he the dude that was defending e-cigs a while back? Or am I mistaken?

I was on a plane recently with a guy that was puffing one of these things. Anyone who says they are odorless is hard of smelling.

They have taken over the lives of like 80% of the smokers at my company. And I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Pitt87..... that stuff stinks just as bad as tobacco.

The company that contracted this French research firm to conduct the tests is not convinced of the results. There are other testing methods and sites that will be used starting in the fall of 2014. I work for the lone American company that will be conducting said tests, that's how I know.

I should also mention that I don't think the results will be any different (I'm not a biologist or scientist)

I would be interested to find out if this applies to all e-cigs or just some. My limited experience in being around an e-cig smoker has left me with no real qualms about them in terms of smell or anything. Althought I'm sure different brands are well, different. Additionally I would be curious as to what carcinogenic chemicals are contained in the e-cig cartridges and how that compares to the what in 1 pack of cigarettes, as well as the amount of carcinogens in the e-cigs versus 1 pack of cigarettes.

So an entity that hired a firm to conduct research on its behalf doesnt believe the findings because they produced negative results? :pop:

That's my main thing. My half-brother smokes them and I don't really mind the smell at all, I just think it looks incredibly dumb. Especially when you are smoking it in a place that is non-smoking.

That and the arrogance that they give when someone tells them it's a non-smoking area.

I never understood using nicotine to get rid of a nicotine habit.

I think when people are trying to quit smoking they are doing so to get away from the carcinogenic inhalants ('smoke') rather than breaking a nicotine addiction.

The last apartment I lived at the people across the hall smoked e-cigs and we could smell that stuff in the halls and in the entrance area of our apartment. I think they are dumb, there are 2 reasons to have them to 1. smoke wherever you want (which sucks because they still stink) and 2. to avoid the smoke of smoking which I guess there not doing. Just give up and go smoke outside!

Go back 25-30 years and could smoke almost everywhere. Airplanes, buses, all restaurants, some college classrooms, etc. Just think about that when you are whining about the "bad smell" of e-cigs. IMHO perfumes and colognes are a far bigger assault on ones senses.

25-30 years ago I wasn't alive to have to deal with the annoyance of smoking inside. Smoking has always been an outdoor activity when I was growing up and as such the smell never would affect me. The second smoking comes indoors it becomes an issue. The majority of e-cigs I have been around have been scentless or flavored to smell like something else (vanilla being one I notice most) so they don't bother me. Now if they would have a negative smell indoors I would be much more inclined to make a mention of it.

Former smoker saying this... Smokers don't know how bad they smell. They're sense of smell is so muted and they are so used to stale tobacco smell that if you ask them, they might not realize that everyone can smell them from a distance. If you smoke ~1 pack a day, its probably the same as re-applying perfume every hour or so.

Perfumes and colognes don't cause cancer (or at least don't cause cancer anywhere near the same level as cigarettes) to people in the same room as the person wearing perfume/cologne.
