70 mph yay or nay

Postby ville5 on Sat Oct 19, 2013 2:30 pm

Should the state make the speed limit on PA interstates and toll roads 70 mph? And do you think it'll pass? Discuss.

Yes and hopefully.

Ohio recently bumped their speed limit up. WV already has 70. Time to get with the program.

I've driven the turnpike between Philly and Pittsburgh countless times setting the cruise between 70-75, driven past state troopers without batting an eyelash

Yes. I generally set the cruise around 12 over, so 77 on the turnpike. I figure troopers will usually wait a couple more minutes for the guy going 85.

They really should up 79 North from Washington to Mount Nebo or whenever it goes up to 65. 55 is too damn slow for the majority of that stretch of road.

Similar to the completely inexplicable 55 stretch on I-70 from Breezewood to the Maryland line

Residential/commercial areas will always be slower; more traffic on and off. Maybe it would be 60 if the upper limit is 70, but that part of the law will not change.

Cars are exponentially safer than they were even 10 years ago. They are safely capable of these speeds and actually higher. Change it already.

I set the cruise at 70 on the Turnpike now. Whether the limit on that portion is 55 or 65... 70.

That actually aggravates me on the turnpike. My general rule is always 12 or 13 over on the cruise in all zones. I hate when I blow by someone in a 65 zone and they then slowly pass me in a work zone. Makes no sense to me.

Work zone is a different issue, I try to follow the limit in work zones especially if it is active. I am comfortable at 70 on the turnpike. That is the speed that I feel safe driving, so that is the speed that I go. I do not care what the non-work-zone speed limit is, I do the speed that I am comfortable at.

I pretty much go 10 over on any street, I've only had 1 ticket so I guess it works. That being said it amazes me how people I fly by suddenly fly be me when the speed limit changes and also how on some roads I litterally pass everyone / seem to be going the fastest and on other roads I'm the old slow granny type driver

I hate when I go 10 or 15 over the speed limit, and people get impatient behind me. I'm going a reasonable speed pal.

If I remember correctly the 55 mph speed limit was set during the 70s oil crisis, based on the idea that average car is most fuel efficient at 40-50 mph and most cars and buses were most efficient around 50-55 mph.

As Pavel Bure mentioned, cars are not only exponentially safer but they're much more fuel efficient.

Agreed, unless you are in the passing lane and keeping pace with someone in the driving line. Either pass, or slow down and get out of the way. I drive thousands of miles a month, and nothing aggravates me more than people blocking the passing lane.

Agree 100 percent in many parts, but way too many sharp curves in the mountain and hilly areas

yes. Some parts that won't work for, like 70 south of breezewood (hey, 65 would be nice there though). But the bulk of I-99 Bedford-Altoona could easily be 80 for a speed limit.

I see no problem with 70 or 75, unless you are driving one of those smart for 2 cars. I've seen some videos of those golf cart things hitting a full size car, pretty brutal I wouldn't want to be in one going 75.
