Just finished driving that and came into this thread to complain about it. Now in about half an hour, ill do it again the other way.

85 to 90 is a safe speed to driving on most highway roads as long as you are paying attention and use common sense

If it's the right roadway, 75-85 is definitely a good speed. There are stretches in Texas that has 80 and 85, and it is very comfortable because it's just a long, straight road. Most other highways should be 75 at least.

I was going 85 on some desolate country roads today.

I remember driving through Utah when I was out there, the speed limit is actually 75 on a lot of roads, and they just recently made about 300 miles or roadway 80 mph. Long, flat, nothingness.

Really, on roads like that, there shouldn't be a speed limit.

One of the scariest things on the roads where I live, is the damn deer. I got a buck and a doe in the last 5 years.

I70 is 55 from new Stanton to after Washington. I regularly do 75 though.

Sort of. Don't know that you can really count that as an example. I live about 25 miles west of Cleveland, and work 20 more miles west of that. None of the interstates on that drive or anywhere near it changed to 70, and all of Cuyahoga county (around Cleveland) is still at 60 or less. Kind of pathetic, really.

70 and 71 did. Was more referring to "major interstates" (as I assumed the thread was, talking about 76, 79, 70)

Growing up, the speed limited was 75 during the day and 65 at night. Took care of need for safety at all times.

It should be 75 at this point. However, if they move the speed limit up to 70 or 75, they need to pump the speed limit around Pittsburgh to 65.

Agreed, unless you are in the passing lane and keeping pace with someone in the driving line. Either pass, or slow down and get out of the way. I drive thousands of miles a month, and nothing aggravates me more than people blocking the passing lane.

Yes. Not on the turnpike because it is too difficult to hear, but on roads with slower traffic and red-lights (ex: 51, 28) I have actually eventually gotten next to someone that was doing that in the pass/left lane, rolled down the window and asked if they grasped the concept of 2 lanes and knew what the left lane was for. People usually get angry, HA!

It's amazing how many people figure, well... I am making a left 5 miles down the road so I will just get over now...

I'm talking about 90... pretty sure that counts as a "major interstate".

Except that part with the Chicanes just south of the Ohio river. I've seen some bad accidents through that area.

It's 55 most of the way from Washington to the parkway IIRC. it goes up to 65 I believe in the Bridgeville area where it turns to 3 lanes.

No. It doesn't go up to 65 until it passes Wexford. It's still 55 in that 3 lane section, but no one ever follows it.

Bad drivers at 50 mph are still bad drivers. Speeds under 90 on good roads are just as safe if he driver isn't an idiot.

Good point. there ARE many idiots on the road, and no real way to keep them off the roads that I can think of. How do you prove you are not an idiot driver?

Speed limit should be at least 70.

I wouldn't mind it being 80.

I don't need to get anywhere fast anymore so I really don't care what the limit is, but how many here are old enough to remember that we went to the national 55 mph speed limit to get better gas mileage and therefor supposedly use less fuel. The government determined that the most fuel efficient speed was 55 mph. With today's cars, wonder what the most fuel efficient speed is? I also guess there isn't a gas shortage anymore.

The "most fuel efficient" speed is probably different for every car. I know the Honda Pilot we have has an ECO light that turns on when you're getting the best fuel economy possible, and the light turning on varies with RPM, not speed.

I'm pretty sure speed enters the equation at some point because of increased air drag as speed increases. And you are right with RPMs, which is why a 6 speed transmission gets better mileage than a 5 or 4 speed.
