We're certainly not out of it. But we would have been eminently in it if Cinci lost today -- they'd lead the North at a staggering 3-4. Instead, they're 1.5 games clear of us.

They're 5-2. They would have been 4-3

Always fun to beat Baltimore, even if the ramifications are false hope and/or hurting draft status.

Realistically it's going to be tough to tank worse than NYG, JAX, TB and MIN. Oakland has a lot of dead cap money so they're likely to drop like a rock as the season goes along, and the Browns will probably go back to trying to lose soon. I predicted 6-10 to start the year, so hopefully that's good enough for a pick in the 6-10 range.

We are going to do something stupid and go 8-8.

i think the worst case scenario for the steelers is a playoff spot.

8-8 would be the worst case scenario IMO... just good enough to delude ownership that changes aren't needed and just bad enough to fall into a mid-range draft pick.

Always feel a little bit bad hoping for your own team to lose, but you're exactly right.

Im not sure what changes wouldnt be made if the Steelers turned around the season. Would they resign Ryan Clark if Shamarko continues to play week in week out? What about the oline? What kind of changes will really happen if the Steelers tank?

The Steelers only have a sliver of hope because of the rest of the AFC North sucks bad. They are not a good football team at all.

They would at least get a good draft pick.

Haley is terrible. Drafting has been kind of suspect... yeah, some of that can be attributed to picking later, but lots of meh. They desperately need impact players on D. Polamalu, when healthy, is still very good, but he doesn't force turnovers anymore. Perhaps Jones will be that, too early to tell.

Having another mediocre season does nothing to get the Steelers back on the road to competing for real. Getting another impact player or two in there would go a long way. They are more likely to get such a player if they have a 5-11 season than they would at 8-8.

I don't want the Steelers to be Jacksonville bad, but I would rather have a down season now while they are recovering from the cap hell/changing of the guard and have their team set to make noise coming out of it.

The last three times the Steelers drafted in the middle of the first round they got Timmons, Pouncey and Jarvis Jones. Those are all good picks. Drafting in the middle of the first this year would put them in range to get someone like Kyle Van Noy, Antonio Richardson, Louis Nix, or Ha-Ha Clinton Dix. This is a strong draft. I still want Clowney though. Or Anthony Barr.

I actually think Colbert should only be allowed to draft from the 3rd round on. He seems to miss too much with the positions and draft spots he shouldn't. Like d and o line. But has picked up a ton of players.

Interesting point. Last year, which started out VERY well when healthy. Here is our line up by draft round on offense:

3 3 33112 1 6
1

1
Here it is on defense:

Dbs: 4. FA. 1. 5

LB: FA. 4. 1. 2
DL: 7. 1 1

Along with some top back ups. The defense was number 1 and Ben was having his best year, and we had some pop on offense. I understand that just because they start it doesn't mean they are really good and that our defense lacked big plays - but if Colbert doesn't blow so many of the picks he shouldn't this is a different story. Most teams count in UFAs to fill a team.

We still have talent but its time to clean house just a bit. Those DE and OT picks are KILLING us right now. Although Heyward seems to be playing ok.

Clearly the Steelers aren't very good. However, the AFC is garbage. I could see the Steelers being in it (playoff push) 'til the very end because the conference is so terrible.
