i have no problems to me with the time out. pitt was able to draw up a plan to execute. it is likely that without the TO, syracuse would have been able to counter quickly and get a quick transition bucket. you cannot argue with allowing a 3 pointer from 35 feet with two guys pretty close to you. the two things that were maddening: pitt not getting the offensive to rebound/getting out muscled on the second to last possession and giving cj fair that open look for 3

If you're the defensive team (Pitt) in that situation, you DO NOT call a timeout. There was a substitution after the free throw so the ref had to hand the ball to the inbounder rather than just picking it up. However, Syracuse could likely only revert to a play they may have run in practice a few times. By calling timeout, Dixon allowed Boeheim to get everybody on the right page. The big mistake Pitt made defending that play is that whatever you do, you can't let the guy catch the ball going TOWARD the basket. He had all the momentum going forward and could get into a more realistic shot.

However, where this game was lost was when with 3:30 left, Pitt's pulling the ball out and just working clock and getting a crap look at the basket. Granted, they had a couple of baseline shots that rimmed out but if you're gonna burn clock against an undefeated team like Syracuse, you'd better get some points. Pitt scored 2 points in the last 3 1/2 minutes and it came on those 2 free throws with :04 left.

How realistic of a shot is a 35 footer?

Well, there's only one NCAA player with a shooting percentage above 50, for three pointers:

At 35 feet? Pretty damn low, I would think.

Yeah, that shot isn't what they drew up. In my opinion, anyone blasting Jamie over the timeout has an axe to grind. It had a negligible effect on the outcome. In fact, the timeout forced Ennis into a trap at half court, Newkirk screwed the pooch and bit on the crossover and gave him the sideline.

If you want to criticize Jamie, let's talk about the last 5 pathetic possessions. Dribble til 10 seconds on the shot clock and panic. That was where the game was (I don't want to say lost but..) compromised?

A lot more realistic than if you force the player to catch the ball going away from the basket with zero momentum, which is what I was getting at with that adjective. It was a hell of a shot and you're right, those last 4 minutes were what put the game in jeopardy not the final sequence.

Not that pitt "should" win each of these close games.. But it's remarkable that they've lost all of them.

But, pitt basketball usually isn't like this. 9-0 at home vs top 5 teams before Cuse. They usually win the big ones pre-march madness. Blowing games like this is very un pitt like for February.

Was at the game today. It was unreal seeing Top of the Hill crawling with drunken yinzers after the game in windbreakers and sweatpants asking 'fer nachoz n' a lager..."

Also, Carolina played a hell of a defensive game. McAdoo would be a monster if he made more than one out of five free throws.

Lol a change?

I think pitt is totally cool with finishing 20-10 every year with 9 of those wins coming against the Arkansas Pine Bluff's of the world and wiggling their way into a future one and done NCAA tourney bid.

That's totally acceptable for them.

Outside a solid run in the ACC tournament this team is NIT bound.

Off and on, I've been watching Pitt for over 30 years.
You eventually accept that they won't reach the highest level.
It's much easier that way.

My issue at this point isn't the tournament underachievement or the seeming satisfaction with not reaching the highest level. The program has regressed the past few years and has had ridiculous roster turnover in that time period.

I wasn't expecting this team to make any kind of run in the tourney, but wtf happened to them? It's like the wheels have completely come off.

It's simple. They have one big scoring threat without Johnson, and he's been ice cold for three weeks. They go as Lamar goes.

The team lost 3 of its top 5 scorers from last year. It will likely have 10 ACC wins when all is said and done. I think it's been a pretty good season. No one thought they'd win this many conference games after all of the attrition after last season.

The concerning thing to me is that there is a lot of youth/inexperience getting minutes now, and I can't say I'm seeing the organic improvement you'd expect to see in the team.
