Geography isn't really taught well in many schools throughout the nation. These kids may be brilliant writers, mathematicians, or scientists, but cartographers they are not.

You should still have a general idea of the world and what it's like.

I understand not knowing the capital of Kazakhstan or something (it's Astana), but you should probably know Canada's capital.

As a geographer, this does not surprise me. People are absolutely clueless about basic geography.

I don't see anything wrong with this. Most of these kids aren't taught geography (I know I wasn't, but had a passion for it, so I studied it on my own). Also, for the 10 or so that they showed struggling, I'd be willing to be there were 30-50 that said Ottawa without much hesitation and about 20 more that said Toronto, because that's a common misconception.

Because Canada is our hat?

I dunno. I just think that geography is important, especially of you want to understand current events, or win money on Jeopardy :pop:

I was inbetween Ottawa / Toronto... Guessed Ottawa. I knew it awhile ago, but forgot. Not something you're constantly reminded of. I had one of those "WOWWW HOW DO I NOT JUST KNOW THIS RIGHT AWAY??" type of moments that many of this kids did.

Who cares? That's not that obvious of a question. Youre just a hockey fan. Harvard kids are smart -- but why would you expect them to be any better at a pub trivia question. My Yale-educated colleague wouldn't know.

No, there's definitely a reason.

I just can't put it into words. I'm sorry I think people should have a general understanding of their world, their continent, and even their own country.

Labeling basic knowledge as pub trivia? That's a first.

I am a total geography nut (actually, I'm a trivia nut in general, but that's another story). Common knowledge is extremely subjective, IMO. Ottawa isn't exactly the most obvious national capital, even if it is our neighbor to the north.

I have absolutely no idea how you could consider the capital of Canada "basic knowledge." Through 19 years of education, not a single teacher told me what the capital of Canada was. Ottawa is Canada's equivalent to Harrisburg---an unimportant city, surrounded by more important cities, known only because it is centrally located and was chosen as capital.

To Shaf's point, you're just defining basic knowledge as "things you know."

For probably 90% of people who have jobs, knowing the capital of Canada means nothing.

If you don't use knowledge or skills regularly, you'll lose them. That's why I hate questions like this being used as a measure of intelligence or the education system.

go to Yale and ask the students to draw a cursive Q then laugh at them when they can't do it.

Cursive is an archaic font.

but it's a more fair question as almost everyone was taught it in grade school.
