Cursive is an archaic font.

but it's a more fair question as almost everyone was taught it in grade school.

Ah...fair enough.

No, there's definitely a reason.

I just can't put it into words. I'm sorry I think people should have a general understanding of their world, their continent, and even their own country.

You must be a college student if you think knowing things like the capital of Canada provides a proxy for knowledge of the world.

Don't worry, everyone who has been to college goes through it.

I agree. Shouldn't this be considered a history question?

I would have guessed Toronto...

I've always sucked at geography.

I don't understand why you felt the need to get all high and mighty because you're older than I am...

Still, I feel like knowing the countries around you should be basic knowledge, considering an alarmingly high number (read: more than 0) of Americans can't even place well-known American cities on a map.

The only thing this proves is that there is a distinct difference between street smarts and book smarts. Yea, these kids might be brilliant in physics or writing or something else that I don't know what the heck it is, but they don't know the capital city of Canada? Can they pick their parents out in a line-up?

Why should that be basic knowledge? I consider basic knowledge to be things you'll encounter in everyday life... reading, writing, doing simple math, communication skills, etc. I actually feel there is a lack of teaching of basic knowledge in public schools such as how to balance a checkbook, how loans/credit cards work, how the banks work, nutrition, etc. But I certainly wouldn't consider geography, let alone the capital of Canada to be something everyone should definitely know.

That's totally not what I'm saying at all, but OK.

It's just something I feel strongly about, especially considering the average person in other countries generally have a better grasp of geography than the average American.

Well yea, if you are in Europe you are forced around a lot of various countries. If you know the capitals of the states around you, that is more apt a comparison than knowing the capital Canada. The US is a huge country with a view of isolationism until provoked or the President declares a police action.

If you are referring to European culture, that's just their culture in general. Every European I have ever met has been all about backpacking, traveling, etc. Like I said, I consider myself a trivia junkie...I'm the guy that will sit there and annoy everyone else while we watch Jeopardy.

Going back to this specific question, which was my main point, the Canada capital is EXTREMELY easy to screw up. Ottawa isn't exactly a household name in any country but Canada. I wouldn't fault someone that heavily for saying something like Toronto.

To your point, do you think it's outrageous if someone can't name every state capital in the United States? I mean, it's our own country, but I am not going to go "HAHA YOU IDIOT" if an engineer at Stanford can't tell me that Montpelier is the capital of Vermont.

I still get mixed up with the captials of the states in the northwest. And I actually enjoy geography.

No, but I at least expect people to know where states are located on the map (which, again, there's an alarming (> 0) number of people who can't).

I would think it's at least a start in it, college student or not (then again, I'm in meow's boat. Geography is one of those automatic things for me).
