Hey Colorado, easy on the munchies.

Recreational Cannabis use now legal in Colorado.

This should be interesting.

It was pretty much legal already. I don't think you'll find many new enthusiasts over there this year.

I just wish it was legal everywhere (and I don't even smoke pot just tired of hearing about it).

Hopefully they set a good precedent and it expands to the rest of the nation. Drug companies are legally allowed to pump the population full of toxins and carcinogens, but weed is illegal. Tax the crap out of it and it will be great for Colorado. Think about the benefits. Less crime: people aren't illegally buying it, people aren't illegally selling it so there aren't drastic needs that need to be taken to go find it and to supply it. Income for the state: They no longer need to house marijuana dealers in jail and they get that extra tax revenue. And by making it legal, it's no longer that "sacred fruit". You know, that thing that's available to you, but you're not allowed to have. Makes you want it even more.

One thing to keep in mind, this post is by someone who has never smoked pot, wouldn't even know how to get it if he wanted to nor likely ever will unless it becomes legalized.

Well, it was legal for "medicinal" uses anyway. I understand that there wasn't a very high bar to cross to get a prescription but making it legal for recreational use is something that is different IMHO.

CNN is reporting long lines outside the apothecaries.

I'm for legalization (even though I haven't touched the stuff since 1989) but it'll be interesting to watch the story.

Overall, a step back for society. For those who don't do drugs, a competitive advantage.

So how long before this thread, which could be a fun thread gets the axe? Every current event seems to become politically charged and soon deleted on this board.

What's the difference between you drinking a few beers and you smoking some pot at night? None.

Why do you believe that?

There are so many benefits to this move, and very little downside.

It seems to me anyway, that cannabis is a step up from alcohol.

And the idea that alcohol isn't a drug is quite amusing.

Really? I don't think anyone is promoting cannabis use here. But a certain amount of people are going to want to "self medicate".

Prohibition showed us that any attempt to legislate morality in this area causes more problems than it solves.

I'm not one for government involvement normally, but in the case of "Sin Taxes", it makes a lot of sense.

Here's to hoping Colorado's experiment is very successful!

Not sure what you mean by "pot elitists".

I don't use it myself but I can see that this so called drug war has been an absolute failure in so many ways. Use the money saved from not jailing people and gained from taxation to provide drug and alcohol counseling services.

interesting. i guess there are people with established lives (career, family, etc.) that weren't keen on breaking the law or finagling a script out of a shady doctor. and now they're high fiving outside of dispensaries today.

it's such an interesting story, i agree. there isn't a single, honest reason why it's illegal. it's actually the best example that comes to my mind of what's wrong with the federal government. instead of serving the public's best interests, they're worried about money and keeping the machine intact...but mainly money. getting greased by lobbyists from pharm, alcohol, private prisons and the DEA's inflated budget that goes to waste every year, specifically.

i don't use the stuff (see my first paragraph), but it should be legal. and we should be devoting our scientific resources into studying its medical value.

as for the morality...it's the equivalent of alcohol -plain and simple. if you want pot illegal, you want beer illegal.

I don't care about that stuff. It's the "pot is way safer than alcohol" stuff. It's an annoyance. I hope this move just makes people shut up about it (as Malk said).
