I feel like the students deserve more of a voice at the decision making table and should receive a little more than free scholarships considering the amount of money schools and corporations make off of their work. I also don't want to see other sports lose their funding, college football to become like the NFL, or the total end of the enforcement of ethical recruiting and academic standards.

This is currently happening? The NCAA is such a fraud. I can't believe that given its allegedly virtuous nature (scholar-athletes) and the amont of money it rakes in that Congress hasn't gotten oversite of it yet.
The NCAA has pretty much turned a blind eye to academic and recruiting fraud recently (UNC and Alabama) after they screwed up the PSU and Miami investigations and punishment. Not mention them ignoring the instances of possible cover up of rapes by football players at Missouri, Notre Dame, and Michigan to name just a few. I am no fan of the NCAA but I don't want to see an environment where there is no oversight. At least right now there is at least an illusion of oversight, which might be enough to keep some schools compliant. Obviously there needs to be more consistent enforcement of the rules and consistent and fair punishments given out. That most likely won't happen until Clown Shoes Emmert and company are ousted.
Northwestern seems like the perfect school to lead this charge. Highly intelligent. Respectable football program, but not a major program where this issue could distract from emphasis on results. Major conference.
