OK, I listened. It's a good album. Hard for me to find fault in it because I have to look at it as what it is, so I can't compare it to much other music, but most of the songs were catchy.. some were pretty hard. I liked many of the grooves. I would probably give it a solid 4 stars out of 5. I like my music a bit more exciting and complex, but this is good stuff and I wouldn't mind having the album in my collection. I'll listen to it again sometime this week. :thumb:

Never posted in this thread, but if you get AXS TV (owned by Pittsburgher Mark Cuban) they have a Ben Folds Five concert on right now. It is just about over, but is replaying around midnight if anyone will be up or wants to DVR it. Good stuff.

^^ Yeah, I watched that. Big BFF fan -- good stuff indeed. The live CD that just came out is pretty good too.

OK.

First I want to d/l the Sabbath album, although I really don't like Ozzy's howling anymore, at least in a live setting.

Finished listening to the new Sabbath. Started off sort of like a disaster I felt it might be, going from a great riff similar to Black Sabbath (the song) to too much of a modern hard rock sound, and I also wasn't too happy with Ozzy to start with. But then a wonderful thing happened. I survived the song and it turned out it wasn't bad, but from then on, I was really happy to listen to the stuff and found it actually pretty close to the good old Sabbath. Many moments taking me back to their greatness so, while not exactly perfect - not that I could possibly expect it from the old farts - it's still a very good one. Song after song, I expected the thing to fall apart, but it only seemed to get better. I guess I'll be buying it. I'll give it at least a 4/5 - and say again it's a surprisingly good album considering their age and time off and everything else.

Methademic, one of the bonus tracks, has one of Iommi's fastest/uptempo riffs he's done while playing with Ozzy. Another bonus track, Pariah, has a riff style completely unheard of from Iommi that has a sort of funk/groove to it. The bonus tracks definitely don't fit in the scheme of the album but man they are outstanding for being throwaways.

The way they end the album with the thunder/rain from the beginning of their first was just an absolutely epic move as well.

I briefly scanned through it, but that Sabbath record sounds much better than I had expected.

Also, the lyrics, of course, while being vintage Ozzy era Sabbath, were written the NIGHT BEFORE recording began. Because I guess Geezer can do such a thing so brilliantly.

They're pretty OK. Depending what picture, but they're not ugly. Wouldn't kick either out, you know.

Portugal. The Man's latest is, top to bottom, the best album I've heard this year.

Their last two albums have been pretty disappointing to me. How does it stack up against, say, Satanic Satanists?

I love seeing that. People in Eastern Europe were so starved for this type of stuff for so long. That audience must have had the time of their lives that day.
