We have our sets in the basement facing each other and do some funny exchanges.

If you've ever seen Godsmack do Batalla de los Tambores...it's like that but not nearly as cool.

Anyone know The Van Allen Belt? Seems like could be a local band opening up tonight?

Growing up an aspiring drummer, Don Brewer was looked at as the man with the single speedy pedal. Times and music styles have changed since back then.

I never cared much for Rage Against the Machine, but they were oh so better than their peers.

I don't know why you're bringing that up. Speed for the sake of speed is fun for 10 minutes, then becomes a circus act. Look elsewhere to a guy like to Michael Batio for that. Here you have one of the top 3 guitar players in all of metal, in one of the top progressive bands over last 20 years. I doubt you ever listened to these guys, judging by your overall taste in music. All you hear is speed, I get it. Not the beauty in what he's playing, the flowing melody, his effortless technique and vibrato, and that golden touch of his. A lot of people get confused by speed. Truth is that fast or slow, it matters nothing when it comes to emotion or musicality, whether it's metal or classical or jazz or bluegrass or flamenco or whatever else you can think of that has world's best instrumentalists. But many people can't get past the speed factor. It's insane to me, but, anyway, why don't you listen to a full album to realize the full spectrum of Mike's playing. If you don't get it, then you and I have nothing to talk about in music terms.

Very good set tonight from Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside.

Wasn't too happy when I yelled "Go Timbers!" after they said they were from Portland, OR and the guitarist said "F*** the Timbers!" Sallie was pretty happy about it, but not this guy. I told my buddy in Portland and he said "typical Portland, too hipster for hipster stuff." Ha.

Drunk. I didn't even know what band you're talking about.

That said, you say yourself that speed is not an end in itself, so we are basically in agreement.

anyone in the pittsburgh area who plays guitar want to buy any of my old effects pedals? I haven't used them in years, and looking for a bit of pocket cash.

i have a BOSS oc-2 octave pedal, an ibanez cf7 chorus/flanger pedal, and a danelectro daddy o fuzz pedal. I only have the ac adapter for the danelectro one, but those are under $10 online. PM me if you're interested.

How is it some bands get better with age like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Pixies etc but some bands get worse?

Metallica Blackened 89 vs 09.

Let me just say that, this is my favorite Metallica song. Jason > Robert at everything, Hetfield never recovered from blowing out his vocals singing So What, Kirk and Lars don't seem to care. I know Metallica arguments are old news....but this makes me sad.

That Seattle 89 performance is their peak live. They were never better ....from like 85-89 they were untouchable live. That 09 performance isn't bad by any means. They still put on a helluva live show even now, but it's never going to be like it was 25 years ago with the style of music they play. Slayer doesn't sound like they did 25 years ago live, nor does Megadeth etc etc.

It's a lot easier to sound the same live when you play music like PJ, or the Pixies, or even Soundgarden, it's not as taxing as most of the thrash stuff from the 80's.

Also while I think Jason is a cool dude, Rob is a better bass layer than him. Jason was more fun live though, as his backup vocals were awesome.

Here is a pretty good recent blackened performance. They cut the solo short which sucks, but other than that its pretty damn good.
