Hockey Hall of Fame will be announcing inductees on Tuesday. Looks like a pretty solid group this year, and I think some deserving players will be left out. Any thoughts on who gets in?
Here is a list of some of the best eligible players:
I'm sure there are some solid players not included on this list. Personally, I think it is going to be Niedermayer, Shanahan, Blake, and Chelios. That being said, there are some really interesting players on this list who deserve consideration. I know there is a strong argument for Makarov, given that this is the Hockey Hall of Fame, not just the NHL Hall of Fame. I don't have a strong opinion on him one way or the other.
Lindros is always a tough call - one the one hand, he was outstanding for a few seasons before injuries really de-railed his career. If he had stayed healthy, no doubt he was a hall of famer. On the other hand, he just couldn't stay on the ice. He had a Hart Trophy in 94-95, and winning one of those is ALMOST a ticket to the HOF. In the end, I think he's on the outside, looking in.
I always really liked Paul Kariya and would love to see him make it someday, but I just don't think he quite has the numbers to make it. However, he was (exactly) a point-per-game player, and among the most exciting players for the last half of the 90s. He also made the all star team 7 times. I hope I'm proven wrong on this one, and he does make it. Loved watching this guy.
Rod Brind'Amour was always underrated. 1,184 points in his career and 2 Selke trophies to his credit. His points per game is not particularly impressive, however, and I don't think he gets in this season. Maybe down the road if there are any weak classes.
Barrasso - as much as I'd love to see him get in to the HOF, I just don't think it will ever happen. He has a Calder and a Vezina. He also has 2 Stanely Cups. Problem is, the Calder and Vezina came in the same season, and I just don't think he was generally considered one of the best of his era (he had to compete with players like Brodeur, Roy, Hasek, Belfour). Also, injuries cost him basically 2 seasons and a number of wins that could have helped his resume.
