The Flyer Front Office Train Wreck

Postby Humperdink on Fri Dec 07, 2018 9:27 pm

Stumbled across this article on the firing of Flyer GM Ron Hextall. For us Flyer haters, it's an enjoyable read.

"He (Hextall) would fume at players grabbing a slice of pizza or a few chicken wings after a game. He even changed what food was available on the plane or served in the team hotel, choosing to go more organic...... When Sean Couturier re-injured his knee in a charity game over the summer, Hextall bristled. He then made it mandatory that all players wear knee braces to protect their knees, including those without knee problems.....

"(Gord) Murphy was a Hextall spy. And he spied on everyone. Players. Coaches. Trainers. Equipment people. Everyone. He was a direct line to Hextall about everything going on in the locker room, training room and even some personal stuff off-ice........It got to a point this season where a lot of the defensemen – especially the younger guys like Ivan Provorov, Travis Sanheim and Shayne Gostisbehere, either didn’t trust their coach, weren’t on the same page or both. ..."

Thought the problem was Hakstol, not Hextall. Have thought Wayne Simmonds game has been impacted by something. This also might be Hextall being thrown under the orange bus.

Hakstol getting fired in 3....2....1..... (reportedly not on the ice for Flyers practice that just started).

EDIT: And now appears to be official.

Assume management wants to get back to goonish, Neanderthal hockey that attracts their fan base and has been a successful model for the last 40 years.

Wonder what they are going to trade to Edmonton for Lucic...

They are going to win at least 15 straight here. They've won 8 straight so far and a cake schedule for the next 10 games or so with a boatload of home games.

I should have said 15-0-1 or something.

My new overreacting prediction: Before the season ends the flyers will be ahead of the Penguins in the standings at some point.

Flyers get Talbot for Stolarz straight up. This might be the first time in a long, long time that goaltending isn’t their weakest link. They have two quality guys now.

They are still weak in depth though on offense and defense. They would be wise to deal Simmonds to address that instead of chasing a first round loss.

Is Talbot honestly that good though? I always thought he was overrated.

From what I understand Talbot and Hart know each other very well. Not sure how, didn't care enough to look into it. However, if the Flyers are planning to stick with Hart now, having an experienced mentor that already knows and likes the kid as the backup should work very well. The "test' will come in seeing if the Flyers resign Talbot. Does Talbot accept that he has already had his payday and that he is not a bonified NHL starter so is willing to take a role of mentor and backup to Hart, with knowledge that if Hart stumbles he will need to fill in for short or long term?
