I still say something is going to wash out with Tampa in terms of a trade with the Pens down the road.

The problem is that they acted a lot like Craig Patrick going into Sid's rookie season. They played fantasy hockey when it came to signing players and ignored any questions of team chemistry . . . and, unlike the Pens, who corrected things with Therrien and then Ray Shero, I don't see TB's owners as being willing to take a similarly hands off approach.

I'd be surprised if anything big happens with Tampa because they just don't have a whole lot.

Malone isn't coming back with his price tag. Prospal might be kind of intriguing, but he played so much on the perimeter for the Flyers last year in the post-season, I thought they signed Aleksey Morozov.

The only player they have on that team that is remotely interesting is St. Louis, but he's more of a playmaker than a finisher and we have enough playmakers (not to mention the $5.25M cap hit he has for this and each of the next two seasons).

Re: St Louis

Actually the only playmakers we have are Sid and Geno. And they can score goals too. I think Sid would flourish with a guy like St Louis or S. Kozlov, who might see the ice in a similiar way and thus create more workable space.

I believe the new CBA prevents teams from picking up salary..

your right, the only way that could happen is if they waive him and we pick him up on reentry waivers then we would only have to pay for half of his salary. But that is not going to happen with malone, unless he really really stinks it up and they get fed up with him. but if that were to happen Pittsburgh would not have first dibs.

This was great :D I wonder if the NHL will suspend Melrose for 6 games for saying something detrimental to the sport for this:

Despite many off-season changes to the roster, the Lightning are the worst team in the NHL, with a 6-13-8 record. In the 11 games they have played since Melrose's demise, the Lightning have won just once.

When Melrose was asked if that statistic gave him any glee, the former coach was very candid.

"I'm not going to lie to you, yeah it does, and any coach who tells you otherwise is a liar," Melrose told the Fan 590, adding, "I hope Tampa Bay doesn't win a game in the next year."

Suspending Barry Melrose for 6 games would be like suspending me for 6 games. No one is going to hire that guy again. It took a circus clown outfit to hire him after 13 years in the first place.

another recap - http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=259045& ... pStory_nhl

This sounds oddly familiar to the Coach T rant from Jan 06:

Tocchet also told the paper that he was going back to the drawing board when it came to players' ice time and roles on the team.

"We are looking for guys who are ready to work, and if there's only six of them, as a coaching staff, you take your six and you work with them," Tocchet told the Tribune. "I might have to start playing one-and-a-half lines or something like that, maybe play one defenseman. Maybe we should devise a system where we play maybe just eight guys."

Semi OT but I don't think that Commissioner Bettman can be pleased that the Lightning coach is someone who recently pleaded guilty to running a sports gambling ring...

The similarities between this Lightning team and the Pens team from 05-06 are striking!

-Finish last in standings season before.

-Draft "The Next One" 1st overall the following season.

-Spend off season going wild during UFA season to add "veteran" leadership around young new stud.

-Team stumbles badly out of the gate

-Coach fired few weeks into season

-Key UFA signing quits to "go home" to the Czech Republic

-New coach calls out players as useless in press.

-Team continues to remain at the bottom of the standings

Did I miss anything yet?

Haha. Awesome. Stamkos'll do better during the season's second half then once the older guys are gone or behind him in the depth chart.

Sid didn't have no lecavalier to pass though.

Oh, we missed an obvious one. New coach spent previous season in a broadcaster's position.

Except their "next one" isn't quite playing as well as our "next one" did as a rookie.

Stamkos was a "next one"? I just remember him being the best player in his draft.
