In case you hadn't noticed, and judging by the complete lack of buzz outside the Ocean State you haven't, the Providence Friars (15-11-7, 13-7-6 conference) are on a little bit of a roll right now and will play UMass Lowell at Schneider Arena tonight, with a win either team can clinch its first Hockey East Regular Season Title. Since the league was started in 1985, no team other than BC, BU, Maine, or New Hampshire has won the Regular Season Championship, although PC has won the Hockey East tournament twice.
On the other hand, with a loss tonight and wins by BC, BU, and UNH, who are all playing teams with fewer than 10 wins on the season, the Friars would lose home ice advantage in the quarterfinals- so they'd better win! With a tie, domination by the Big Four is pretty sure to continue.
PC is led by Flames third round draft pick Goaltender Jon Gilles. The Freshman recorded his fifth shutout of the season last night at Lowell.
Let's go Friars!!!!
