Yeah I've done a couple now and he seems to drop to the second round. Very odd. I'm also seeing that if you don't have one of the first four or five picks(Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos, Backstrom, Sedin) taking a goalie is the best bet.

Pretty good team. Again LW is so shallow this year. Getting Sharp in 13 is pretty much unreal. Mason in 12th? Wth? Do you only start 2 LW/RW?

Depending on the scoring format, I think this is definitely true, but I would easily substitute Malkin for Stamkos in that group. I think its these five guys. Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin, Backstrom, Green. Then I guess Stamkos and Sedin sit a slight tier above the next group, but, I think taking Stamkos top 5 is a bit of a mistake. Vinny will bounce back this year, scoring will be more spread out. Stamkos will struggle to match last year's goal and point totals this season before settling in around that area in future years. Vancouver is too deep too. Those 5 then goalies in most formats, I think.

I'm also finding there there are still pretty decent starting goalies to be had around round 7. Turco and Niemmi to name a couple. Left wing this year is sooooooooooo thin, just massively thin. Kunitz is actually a sleeper though. If he stays healthy that's a 20-25 goal, 50-60 point guy dropping to the 10th+ rounds.

Re: Fantasy Hockey Results

Postby Ben Klingston on Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:51 pm

We have a bit of a different league setup... it's a keeper league, with a salary cap, and draft is an auction. 27 man roster, 17 actives (10 forwards - can be wings or centers- 5 dmen, 2 goalies) plus 10 reserves. Separate rookie draft adds 2 additional potential players to activate. Each team has $300 to spend on salaries going into the season. After each season, a player's salary is increased by a predetermined % of the previous year's salary. I've been in a few other leagues and this setup is by far the most fun I've had in fantasy. It's always interesting at the free agent draft as there are some real bargains to be had as owners start to run short on cash - the strategy is to sandbag and hold back on some 'sleepers' that no one has bid on then steal them on the cheapl. Below are my results.

For comparison, top-flight FAs (Kovalchuks, Gonchars, Luongos) usually go for between 30-40 at auction, goalies at a bit more of a premium.

Cammalleri - $22 (resigned from 18)
Downie - 8 (resigned, PIMs are a stat category)
Fisher - 5 (resigned from 1)
Getzlaf - 22 (resigned from 18)
Morrow - 5 (resigned from 1)
B. Richards - 18 (resigned from 11)
C. Stewart - 11 (resigned from 8)
Havlat - 11
Kunitz - 9 (hits are a category)
Comrie - 9
Brassard - 12 (resigned from 8, former rookie pick)
Brouwer - 5 (resigned from 1)
Voracek - 12 (resigned from 8, former rookie pick)
Savard - 8 (potential for bargain next year, even if he misses this year)
Arnott - 5
Little - 1
Mueller -1 (potential bargain, even if he misses significant time)
Bogosian - 8 (resigned from 5, former rookie pick)
Doughty - 8 (resigned from 5, former rookie pick)
Hedman - 5 (resigned last year's rookie pick)
Wideman - 1
Streit - 17
Russel - 1
Barker - 1
Lundqvist - 22 (resigned from 18)
Kiprusoff - 31
S. Mason - 12 (resigned from 8)
This year's rookie picks - S. Bernier, Stepan

Looking back, I probably overpaid for at least Brassard and Voracek (my rookie projects, hate to abandon) and Comrie (homer pick). Came out of the draft with a bit more unspent cash than I'd have wanted - we can sign FAs at $5 min through the year, and get up to $5 cash back for any cut players. I was kind of in an in-between year and I'm hoping at least a few of my $1 pickups will pan out to a bargain for next year at least, though I wish I would have won at least one more marquee FA. Getzlaf as my top offensive gun is a bit scary. Also, i was really thin at D and counting on young guys like Bogosian and Hedman to advance significantly, and now with Streit hurt I'm pretty much screwed.

That's the rumors I've heard from NYI bloggers, so I figured I'd risk it as a bench pick. He could have a huge season if he makes the big club.

Definitely a solid team in a 14-team league.

Your LW scares me a bit with a couple risky(ish) picks in Leino (will you get playoff performance or performance of the rest of his career?) and Booth (concussion risk) and Mueller (concussion already/risk for long layoff), though you probably nabbed Mueller late.

That being said, you always have to have gambles in a 14-team league. With LW so extremely thin this year, I'd feel much more comfortable with gambles at C, RW, or D. If you need to upgrade here you'll be competing with lots of other GMs that need to do the same.

On the whole, you are counting on a lot of young guys -- Stamkos (I expect a dip), Steen (lots of depth in St. Louis and last year could have been anomalous), Ryan (Anaheim looks to be a bottom 5 team this year and the center experiment scares me), Leino, Voracek, Letang, Demers. I like Gagner and Little on your bench a lot, though. And Mueller if he can return is a big boost to your left side.

Bryz - Anderson in a 14-teamer is about as good as you can get. I think Bryz is top 5 again. Considering you have those two and Stamkos and Ryan that's an impressive group to lead your team.

With strong seasons from the young guys and a repeat from Anderson, you could easily compete for the champ.
