Seems a bit much for an undersized puck mover with limited defensive skills who has struggled this year but then again I honestly haven't watched him play since he was traded.

It may look that way, but that's a ridiculous notion. Any GM who does something like that should and would be fired. You don't correct a mistake by making a bigger one that will last for years and cost a significant amount of cash.

I cant think of any scenario where offering lady gogo almost 5 mil for 4 years makes a GM look particularly good at his job

Goligoski is getting paid this much because he's a valuable commodity, which is also why he was able to bring back Neal to the Pens, a disappointing season that possibly is due to injury notwithstanding. It wasn't long ago that Goligoski put together a nice finish to the season in Dallas while Neal had one goal in 20 games for the Pens. I still think that was a very fair deal for both sides. Dallas got the puck-moving D they wanted plus dumped Niskanen's salary, the Pens got the young scoring winger they wanted. Goligoski for Neal is a fair need-for-need swap. Where the Pens ended up with fortune is Niskanen improving his play. Not only did they get a decent bottom pairing guy to replace Goligoski, they could end up trading him at higher value for, let's say, another young forward.

Goligoski was a pretty good defenseman when he was with the Pens.

Yeah, he needed to work on a few facets in the D zone, but he played pretty well in the offensive zone.

If you couldn't see Goose had a great upside (which is why we got so much for him in the first place), I don't know what to tell you.

This is a well deserved extension for him, and I'm glad to see he's still playing well in Dallas.

I realize that's sarcasm, but I still feel it needs to be said that we need to see what Neal will command during the offseason.

This is the Cliffs Notes version of scouting on a guy who is probably in the top 20 Defensemen for offenisive ability. You admit you haven't watched him though. There are probably 15 teams in the league who would be upgrading their top PP QB spot by signing him. It may be more than that. He is under-rated defensively by people who don't appreciate that a Dman doesn't have to rattle the boards to be effective.

Let's put it this way, when Letang was out I would have much preferred to have him to step up instead of having Paul Martin on the point on the PP. Defensively, they are not that different either, although Martin is slightly better positionally when he isn't at the depths of his suckitude.

This is a good signing for Dallas, because they do not have any D anywhere near his abilities - and yes it is a factor that they traded away two strong assets to get him.

The analysis above is akin to the folks who sum Crosby up by saying he is good, but he is a diver and a whiner.

Neal himself will probably command north of $4m.

I'd say Neal may be making a pretty strong case to be paid in the 5 million range, and for Malkin's sake, you do anything you can to sign him.
