I used to work part time at an ice rink running the scoreboards for a roller hockey league over the summer. One night, the ref, who was also my travel team's coach, had plans. The game was just dragging on. All sorts of whistles. Got to a point where he just stopped calling off sides or even penalties because he wanted to get out of there.
So, at the first intermission, he skates over to me and asks if I can run the clock a bit after each whistle. So after each whistle, I let it go like 5 seconds or so. The 2nd period goes by a bit faster.
About half way through the 3rd pd, one of the teams called a time out, and the ref signalled me to start running the clock during the time out. I hit the button... Maybe 25 seconds come off, and someone from the losing team noticed and started flipping out. So we ended up having to put the time back on. Whatever.
I know, I know... csb... I don't even think it's that good a story, but I've just remembered it 15 yrs later for some reason.
