Are you talking about the same Green who couldn't make the Olympic squad because of his laziness and poor defensive work in his own end? I wouldn't put Green in the top-5 of NHL dmen and there is quite a gap between him and championship warriors like Chara and Lidstrom.

Green means a lot to the Caps during the regular season, but he's not an elite NHL dman. I'm not sure he has any more value to the team he plays for than a Doughty/LA, Keith/CHI, Enstrom/WPG, Boyles/SJ, Yandle/PHX or the aforementioned Chara and Lidstrom. Or Weber, though Suter is a slightly a little better overall, giving Nashville the kind of depth most teams do not have.

Green is not the strongest D-man in his own zone, and because of the material team Canada management had to toy with he was left of the olympic squad.

That doesn't mean he's not a terrific, very valuable player. He's a stud.

Doughty isn't even in the top 25 of scoring for Dmen.
Karlsson is having a great year, still relatively unproven.
I like Suter, but Weber is better.

Mike Green is a 2time 70pt defenseman.
He's had terrible injury luck. (ie concussion from Orpik shot.)
When he's healthy he runs the caps offense. He's a big reason AO and the Caps are struggling.

Obviously offense matters more than defense. All top Dmen in NHL history are offensive Dmen. Orr, Coffey, Bourque, etc.

Either way, he's a D-man. Don't see people saying they love Brooks Orpik because he scores a goal or 2 every year (note: I realize Green and Orpik are different players, just using an example).

The reason why Green isn't as good as anyone of those guys mentioned is because while those guys are good offensively, they're at the same level defensively. Green isn't.

Have you even seen Mike Green play in the past few years? He has certainly become a much better defenseman that warrants calling him a top 10 defender in the league.
