Official Playoff Prediction Thread.

Postby Headshot77 on Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:22 pm

Now that the eastern conference standings are pretty much locked (caps and panthers can still switch places), I figured it is time to start predicting how the playoff matchups will work out.

Honestly, I don't think it matters which spot the southeast teams are in, The Rangers and the Devils will kill either the panthers or caps with their tough, defensive systems. Pens in 6 against the Cryers. I believe the team most likely to upset would be Ottawa, but I still believe the Bruins will win out.

I would give the edge to the Rangers against the devils in the second round, and we have seen how well Pittsburgh has played the bruins this season, so I predict a Rangers-Penguins Conference final, which will be tough, physical, and likely go to 7 games.

I know almost nothing about the west, so I wont make any predictions about them.

Any thoughts?

I agree with you on the East.
In the West, Vancouver will paste San Jose.
Nashville vs. Detroit is a lock and that should be a fantastic series.
Blues will defeat LA/Phoenix. Hawks could easily lose to LA/Phoenix.
I think it'll probably be Vancouver vs. the winner of Detroit/Nashville but wouldn't be surprised to see St. Louis in the wc finals.

The Caps can still move up to 7th if Ottawa loses in regulation and if they beat the Rangers as well.

And if it is Pens and Rangers in the 3rd round, quite honestly the only way the Rangers take us to a 7th game is if Lundqvist plays completely out of his mind. They've been great this year - but not against us. Not against real teams. I'm still not sold on the Rangers. We've beaten them decisively here these last 4 games, and I don't think they really outplayed us in the 2 games they won earlier this year. Plus, we didn't have Crosby for those games, obviously. That's kind of a big deal.

The Flyers are the best team in the East aside from the Pens so quite honestly, we're getting the best matchup of the 2 best teams in the conference to start off the playoffs. They're the only team that I'm really concerned about, because they've had our number. Having said that, once the playoffs begin, it's a whole new ballgame and the Penguins have superior talent, much more playoff experience and are a much more mature team than the Flyers could ever wish they were. I'll also take Fleury over Bryz or Bob any day. So yeah. Pens in 6.

This is way premature, especially in the West.

Chicago can still beat out Detroit for No. 5. Detroit-Nashville is not set.

St. Louis can still be No. 1.

Any of the three Pacific qualifiers can win the division.

And in the East, Washington could still be 3,7 or 8.

Only PHI-PIT is set.

The Capitals still scare me no matter who they play. Are they likely to upset someone? No. Can they? Absolutely, especially if Vokoun could somehow come back.

Wouldn't it make sense to wait until the matchups are set?

Everyone believes that the caps are going to beat the rangers? Lol, the caps are huge underdogs to start with, and they have made it a habit to choke in the playoffs. no way.

Until the Caps really prove themselves in the post-season, no way in hell I would favor them over any other team. Caps are simply not as good as the media hype because they sorely lack the kind of team chemistry that leads to deep playoff runs. As usual, their blueline and goaltending are question marks yet again.

As far as having a guy like Dale Hunter who was HC of a team solely because he happened to also be one of the owners, good luck against some of the HC's in the East who are proven and know how to gameplan and adjust for more than just one game but instead a series.

Only if Vokoun comes back and only if Vokoun plays lights out. Right now, if the Caps/Rangers play, that's going to be a pretty short series. 5 would be my guess.

Sorry to steal your little setup Godric.
EASTERN CONF
First Round:
Rangers - Senators ~ Rangers in 6 (Ottawa is the team most likely to cause upset in my opinion)
Bruins - Capitals ~ Bruins in 5
Panthers - Devils ~ Devils in 4 (The Devils have been playing lights-out)
Penguins - Flyers ~ Penguins in 5

Quarter Finals:
Bruins - Penguins ~ Pens in 6
Rangers - Devils ~ Rangers in 7

Conf Finals:
Penguins - Rangers ~ Penguins in 6

The way I have it setup, the pens could play 32 games against only three different opponents

Come on. Are you all serious? How are the caps such a hot upset pick? They really don't have much of a chance to upset the bruins and no way they would have beaten the rangers.

If Ovechkin keeps remembering he's one of the best players in the league like he has been the last few weeks they have a shot. Plus having Backstrom back helps immensely as well.

Anyone else feel this is going to be one of the closest playoffs in recent memory? I think there won't be a series over in less than 5 in the entire 1st round.
