Gonchar is actually one of the few guys I actually trust on the PP. Anytime a puck gets kicked back to him, he does his job by maintaining control and either making a good pass or letting a shot go. True, he gets alot of shots blocked. But I'd rather have him taking the shot and there being a chance of it going in than coughing up the puck at the blueline and giving up a breakaway or 2 on 1. He's an excellent skater with the puck, he makes good passing choices, and that's what makes him an asset to the PP.

He's not the best in the defensive zone. I think everyone can agree on that. But to put the blame for an ineffective PP squarely on him is nuts.

It's the system, period. We need more of an overload PP instead of this half-assed cycling 2-2-1/umbrella hybrid, or whatever else they decide to do on a particular day. We have plenty of good puckhandlers and shooters to make an overload useful. I think the current setup is too conservative - like we're more worried about giving up a shorthanded rush than trying to score. And if it's not that, then we're too set on finding a perfect shot. Garbage goals count just as much as highlight-reel goals, and I think we can all agree on that just by watching the last few games.

At this point Gonchar is getting paid $5m to hit PKers in the shin pads and carry the puck up ice at a snail's pace.

Why is Gonchar allowed to carry the puck up ice on the PP? Both PP goals tonight were the result of other players carrying the puck into the zone.
