Possible Deadline Day Acquisitions

Postby npv708 on Thu Jul 01, 2010 7:02 pm

Nothing like jumping the gun, right?

If the pens stay with what we got and wait to make a move for a winger on deadline day this year, it seems that it could be a pretty decent class of players:

2011 Free Agent class (players most likely to be traded at deadline)
Richards, Brad
Thornton, Joe
Semin, Alexander »
Gagne, Simon »
Kovalev, Alexei »
Nylander, Michael »
Bergeron, Patrice »
Connolly, Tim »
Arnott, Jason »
Ryder, Michael »
Handzus, Michal »
Sullivan, Steve »
Stillman, Cory »
Williams, Justin »
Sturm, Marco »
Koivu, Mikko »
Hejduk, Milan »
Vrbata, Radim »
Cole, Erik »
Langenbrunner, Jamie »
Knuble, Mike »
Clark, Chris »
Samsonov, Sergei »
Backes, David »
White, Todd »
Miettinen, Antti »

Now I'm getting a little verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves.

Obviously it depends on how those respective teams are doing around trade deadline day, but I don't like anybody on that list.

you mean because of salary? or just that you don't like anyone on that list?

I think you're crazy if you don't think anyone on that list would be a great addition to a team.

A little bit of both. There are some good players on that list...but some are either disappearing acts in the playoffs, too injury prone, too old, or just cost too much.

Hedge Duck is getting a little old - but I've always liked him. Handzus or Arnott could fill a third line center position really well. Vrbata and Williams work the power play well and are right-handed.

Plenty of names there. None that immediately jump out - but plenty who could compliment Sid/Geno. You never know who is going to click with who. Jagr had one of his best seasons on a line with Kip Miller.

Joe Thornton would not fit this team. A playmaking center is the last thing this team needs. They need a big bully winger or a sniper.

The ultimate player for this current Pens team would be Rick Nash. He would solve three problems (powerful winger, sniper, big body in front of the net)

But, there's that whole salary cap thing.......Too bad, cause I'm sure Nash would love to play with Sid.

hopefully st louis tanks, and is completely out of the playoff picture by... let's say january. And in this completely hypothetical situation, david backes makes it publicly known to the blues' mgt that he wants out. Their hand is sort of forced, so we send them a 2nd rd pick in next year's draft and a conditional pick in the 2012 draft. :pop:

I hope Guerin signs with another team, breaks his leg in training camp, returns in February and signs with the Pens in March.

Sure beats having to put up with him throughout the regular season. At least he'd be rested that way.
