Tennis

Postby Idoit40fans on Sun Sep 04, 2011 3:21 pm

I thought there was a tennis thread, but couldn't find it. I have determined that there should be one now that we're entering the second week of the last slam of the year :pop:. Obviously the US Open is going. Last couple of years I wasn't really following tennis as much as I used to, mostly because Hewitt, my favorite player is largely irrelevent internationally anymore. I'm liking Donald Young a lot this in this tournament so far, he may be my next favorite. I don't really know who my favorite women's player is, probably Petkovic just because she is awesomely funny.

What prompted this though, is a question that just came to me: Does anyone still use a one handed backhand? Federer is the only one I can think of that sometimes uses it, but it seems to basically be gone. I can't even use a two handed backhand when I play, it feels both weaker and less controlled...and when I backhand i want to put slice on it and I don't even know how I would do that with a two handed shot. Is there anyone else that actually uses it other than Federer? Is it something thats mostly dead because wooden rackets are gone?

First, I have played tennis since I was 2. It's weird though because I have NEVER been able to get into watching tennis. I'll check out late rounds here or there but I don't watch much at all.

I grew up and learned 2 handed, then switched to 1, then back to 2. For slice, you have to switch to a 1 hander, and I think most pros do that as well. I believe the switch to predominantly 2 hands has to do both with the rackets and the power players hit with now. You can drive through a 1 handed backhand with power shots, and players are basically crushing the **** out of the ball now. I may be wrong, but it seems like you have a lot more margin for error on a 2 handed backhand. 1 handed is all about timing. It's hard/impossible to muscle through a late shot and put it back in the court.

Well thats definitely true. So much more of a baseline game now. Its just annoying to me, I just love the action on a one handed backhand and you rarely see it unless someone is in recovery.

Serving and volleying died when guys learned to return the 115mph serves straight back at you at 120 mph.

I normally get the Tennis Channel but none of tonights matches are playing on that channel. In fact, on my guide it even says programming is not available at this time.

What the heck is going on??

Del Potro uses it regularly. I think people are faster and stronger than they were in the past so they can generate more power with it than a two handed backhand.

Secondly, a two handed backhand makes for easier placement on the court (if that's your thing).

Tennis Channel has been on with no issues for me this evening. Great tiebreaker between the lovely Kirilenko and Stosur right now.

Kirilenko 17-15 in the tiebreaker so onto the 3rd set. 3 successful replay challenges for her in the tiebreaker.

I was watching when it happened, it looked like cramping and thats what he said it was. It was like the reporter wanted to make him admit something else, but with the temperatures, i'm sure it was cramping. He'll drink more fluids next draw and not miss a beat.

Due to being in the car for effing 3 and a half hours longer than I was supposd to be, I missed half of the UMD game and the Petkovic match. Not happy that I missed the petko-dance. :pop: Either way though, I like her to beat whoever comes out of this match as long as her knee stays strong.

Go Muller! and Roddick!

ESPN lied this morning and told me there were no matches, I assumed due to rain delay.
