For sure. I'm baffled that they're continuing with it considering the amount of SH opportunities they're giving up. They're going to play Philly in the first round. Philly scores a lot of shorties. What genius thinks it's a good idea to keep that PP unit going? It's not scoring anyway. 5 forwards would always be a bad match-up against Philly, why even waste your time with it right now, practice and use something now that can be used in the first round.

This. Their defensive strategy has relied way too much on Fleury for months - now that he's not as sharp
(warn down or whatever) the issues become glaringly obvious.

I don't think it's just that, though. They were not this sloppy defensively the last calender year. The last time they were this sloppy was early 2010-2011 season. Which happened to be the last time they had most of the team healthy. They're never going to be a shutdown D team because that's not the way the team plays. They play aggressively and I think that's a good thing. But they've never really figured out how to play that way while maintaining defensive responsibility under Bylsma. They did it for the Cup run and have struggled with it ever since. The only time they've played good team D is when Sid and others have been out. They had no choice because suddenly they weren't an offensive power. Now they're averaging a ridiculous amount of goals for per game but their goals against in that span is starting to catch up.

Can't. The Pens burned their 4 call-ups already.
Dammit.

Gonna change my Penguin jerseys to say "Meat" instead of Penguins, cause they got million dollar talent and nickle brains.

I looked at the penalties from that end game scrum, and there were no instigator penalties given out, so unless Shanahan gets involved there should be no suspensions.

80% of the Defensive problem is due to our forwards. They have to stop thinking they are the Oilers of the 80s and play Penguins hockey.
This plus the the power play is a momentum killer. The best it has been able to do is trade chances with the kill. This is not good. Two units needed here. What we have done is made all 5 on the PP less effective because freaking everyone deserves to be on the first power play.

Correct. If their would have been an instigator, it should have been the four Cryers that made a beeline for Vtale after a clean hit. Unfortunately for Simmonds, he drew the short straw and paired off with Engelland.

Comparing the Pens to the Caps is a bad analogy. The Caps failed in the playoffs, in large part, because they have too many players not willing to pay the price in the playoffs.
I don't think the Pens have anyone on their roster that fits that description.
The league is just very even - there aren't any teams without some holes. The Pens on paper, really don't have any glaring ones - so that's adding to the frustration in games like today.
The Flyers are a very dangerous team - they could beat any team in the league in a playoff series. I just don't see their goaltending holding up for four series - that will be their undoing - hopefully in round one..
BOB played well today though - give him credit.

BOB feels right at home at the consol. the pens; Sid and Gene shoot, right at his stomach. they have beginning from
2010 2011 home opener.
They shutdown jagr and still allow six goals.

edit~ I'm done.
I bet pierre felt awfully small with granado and lavioletter on either sid of him.

I honestly hope you are right, because right now I don't have a lot of confidence in the Pens ability to beat the phlyers and out work them in the playoffs if recent games with them have been any indication.

Hartnell quoted as saying Consol is a much easier place to play in than the Igloo was. Sadly he may have a point.

Seth Rorabaugh @emptynetters
: "This is a much different building than the Igloo. You’re almost scared coming into the Igloo."
truth! Not one sign planted around the consol today. It lacks in atmosphere during the play-offs.
but, F nell said it was all in good fun with Hulk guy, who was behind the fly boys bench today, at the end of the game.

The Pens have dropped all the way to 17th in goals against. Yuck. They were top ten before Sid came back.

They don't look good that is for sure. If they want to win, they can't allow 6 goals a game.

HCDB told Dave Molinari after the game he will use the 5 forward powerplay in the playoffs.
Why he is so stuck on something that doesn't work is beyond comprehension.
