I hope Vokoun didn't buy a place in DC, because he's taking his talents elsewhere next year.

Yup, been that way since he was in Saskatoon...terrific goaltender, great reflexes, great sense, great lateral ability, total professional, paid his dues...he's gonna be a terrific goalie in this league...

Varly is a really good goalie too and played real well down the stretch for Colorado and commanded a huge return because of his upside. He has a lot of Fleury tendencies does Varlamov...Varlamov has one of the best blocker hands in the league, tremendous athleticism, great reflexes on him too.

DAE notice that is seems like every other team in the NHL has better goaltending depth than the Pens?

Not really surprising when you consider that they have only drafted five goaltenders since they selected Fleury, none of them above the fifth round. It just hasn't been an organizational priority.

Who gives a rip about goaltending depth?

All that matters is that your number 1 is really good.

Unless the guy gets hurt a lot; goaltending depth doesn't mean squat.

Let's be honest: nearly every single team in the playoffs is entirely dependent upon their starter. While a few teams are lucky enough to have a good player tied up behind their starter- that has happened more by luck than by any plan. Some jobber signed as a cheap backup gets a chance to start, and goes nuts (cough*Lalime*cough) and then everybody and their brother pretends "OH yeah1! WE KNOWED THAT WAS THE DEAL! OH WE SO SMRT!

If you starter goes down in the playoffs, you are cooked.

The Caps, much as I'd like em to, aren't going to beat the Bruins with their callup goalie.

Here's hoping I have to eat crow. But I'm not going to change my dinner plans around it.

If the Caps lose this series, it won't be because of Holtby.

Was Wregget/Hedberg/Tugnutt/Leighton/any other goalie with a decent playoff run that soon faded into obscurity that good?

He's nothing more than Varlamov for them. Varly came in and stunned people until they had enough sample size to figure him out. The Pens of all teams abused him and his weaknesses.

Different styles. Could be wrong, but Holtby is more mature technically than Varly at the same age by far.

I realize they're different. I just meant solely for the fact that nobody knows about this kids weaknesses yet. It took up until the Pens to realize that Varly's glove was weak so they started shooting at that spot.

Sooner or later Holtby will be figured out and it has nothing to do with being good or bad. The NHL just hasn't seen enough of him in pro games yet. I think.
