Crosby's Next Contract

I'm curious as to what people think Crosby's cap hit will be per year after he re-ups. I've heard all sorts of numbers, but I just can't see him taking much more than the 8.7 per that he makes now. He doesn't seem like a guy who is all about the money and as Captain it would really set the tone for others to take a little less than market price.

That's pretty much a given, but the question is what will he likely demand? Is he going for top dollar? A bit of a discount to keep the team intact?

I won't know what to say, if he thinks having an even more skewed cap distribution is a good thing.
But we'll see...it's his right to try and get paid as much as he can.

Yes, they're business decisions. He's worth more to the Penguins than he can ask for under the CBA.

Eh. Maybe true but I don't get why. I don't think he's really the marketing empire he's made out to be.

Today's CBA mandates that one player can only consume 20% of the overall cap. He should get 20% in that case, unless it changes in the next CBA, then he should get the max under that agreement.

I've mentioned this previously and don't believe that there are any restrictions on the Penguins offering part of his compensation in the form of team ownership. This would be similar to how most executives and key personnel in corporations are compensated (thats right, most executives don't get $20 million in cash every year...), which has two affects:

1. Its a retention plan - Sid will always be a part of this organization, during and after his career.
2. It limits the exposure to cash outlays for the organization - This is what put the team in bankruptcy and cause us to lose players like Jagr and Kovalev when things got worse... money owed to players. Its basically how Mario ended up being re-paid the amounts he was owed also... converted it to equity.

Crosby is a winner and wants to win, he is smart enough to know the more he takes the less that is spent on talent around him.

I do expect a raise and Shero's normal 3 year term for him because of the injuries. I don't see the Pens trying to play a cap game with front loaded contracts or anything like that. My guess is 9.0m 9.25 and 9.35. Expect Geno to take the same unless he completly tears up the league next year or goes into hiding.

Staal is the harder issue, if I were GM i would be between 5 and 6 for staal. 6 is pushing it for me I would rather be closer to the 5 mark but the small amount of difference isn't worth losing staal over unless there is a good trade out there that makes sense.

If Sid wants that 20% number I can't give it to him... I look for a trade. That's just too much to lock up in a guy that has his injury history. Let some other team take on that albatross. I don't think Crosby will do that, in fact I don't think he can command his current salary given his injury history. I like the 8 years 7M number.

I wouldn't want to be the person paying the insurance premium, on an 8 year contract for Crosby.
