That seems to be the hot rumor.

Madden was saying 14 years at 9 million per season. If either is correct or in the ballpark, that is a deal I am drooling to sign if I'm Ray Shero. A .3 million increase from one contract to the other with the salary cap going up by nearly 20 million over the course of the first contract is a gift.

Crosby (and then Malkin later...assuming he wants to stay and asks for the same) for a total of about $600,000 more against the cap? :thumb:

Color me an optimist, but a cap hit like this could make the financial difference is retaining Staal.

Money won't play a factor in retaining Staal.

Staal will play a factor in retaining Staal...

I haven't discussed it with Staal, but ok.

I'd take 10 years 90 mil and run with it. That's a fairly similar cap hit to what he's had before.

I have, and he WANTS Eleventy million dollars, more PP time and Sid's parking spot.

Sounds to me we are reaching a tipping point.

This would be a very good deal for the Pens. Crosby will significantly outproduce that cap hit for at least the first 5 years or so and it's likely that he does so for the entirety of that contract. At worst, during the latter years he will still produce at the rate of fellow $9M players in the league.

Hard to see a downside to this. Even if Geno takes a little more, I think we're in really good shape. Classy move by Sid, taking years over dollars, and not in such a manner to make the union upset.

You don't remember the rumors last year? Apparently he was unhappy with the organization because of how his concussion was handled, and supposedly his dad was getting involved too or something. Or maybe it was just something that someone here made up.

Exactly. The Pens can't give Staal what Staal wants no matter what the Cap will be. That is a top 2 Center role.

This is all speculation and rumor and more than likely 95% untrue.

Rumors are always rumors. But certain sources are significantly more reliable. Friedman and Mirtle are reliable. First of all, they work for respectable outlets that wouldn't stand for rumor mongering for the sake of ratings/web site clicks. Seconrd, these guys aren't in the business of rumors. They're in the business of hockey talk, and when they have some information to pass along, they do. They're in the hockey news/analysis business. Guys like Madden and Eklund, on the other hand, throw crap at the wall all the time, and more often than not, it doesn't stick. They're in the entertainment business. There's a big difference.

Now, that being said, I wouldn't take anything at this point as gospel. We're a month away from Shero having access to negotiate Crosby's contract with his agent. Anything that is discussed now could very well be true as of now. But a lot can change in a month.

Sounds to good to be true, but that seems to be the norm when you are talking about Sydney Crosby.

If this is true, Sid just wants to be a winner, i guess you can take less when you are the hightest marketing name in Canada.

hope this is true.
