Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Expect the Penguins to announce Sidney Crosby's contract extension on Sunday. Over $100 million dollars with an AAV of close to $9 mil per.
edit: Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Crosby's agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports just told me the deal will be $104.4 million over 12 years

Well, we have known for weeks now that it would be 9 million. Love the national media has finally caught up with the biggest non-story in the NHL.

probably a non-story, but still nice to see. only 300-grand raise for the best in the game. i like it!! would think geno gets the same treatment next year?

The #1 rule in Detroit was that no one made more than Lidstrom, and the same will apply to Crosby.

Captain my Captain!
thanks Sidney for never allowing a doubt about where you'll be playing hockey! Loved the first 7 years... more greatness in the next.
Elliott Freidman also being credited with tweeting about this a few weeks ago!

i would still be surprised to see he only makes an extra 300,000 per year. I have a feeling the Pens front loaded his contract and I hope the new CBA doesn't screw them like it should for these front loaded contracts.

So Shero is finally signing one of the long deals, I think I saw somewhere, twitter most likely, that they might be limiting teams to these long deals in the new cba.

you are correct
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Expect Crosby deal to be front-loaded, will be 12 or 13 years in length. Details still being finalized over next few days.

9.1 a season for 11 years, 100.1 total contract. Only way i can think that is how they got over 100 million. Unless the Pens dived into the Detroit model contract, "front loaded".
Get it done now befor the new CBA and that front loaded contract is restricted or outlawed.

Even if there is an issue with the new CBA. This is what you have to do prior. One could argue even that all new deals after the cba will be an issue, but deals signed prior won't be.

The front loading won't be a year or two tacked on at 45 years old of $500K...or non-sense like that. Sid will be 37-38 when this deal ends...and he won't be settling for a league min salary.

but in terms of cap hit, it's basically 300-grand per year (8.7 now).

So your saying that the rule is that no one makes more than your best player? I would guess thats a fairly safe bet.
Geno probably gets a matching offer or decides that he doesn't want to be signed for as many years.

Could be 12 years, 105 million for an AAV of 8.75
That would be "close to 9 million" and "over 100 million"

12 years, $104,400,000 would be $8,700,000 exactly.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
If Crosby deal is 12 or 13 yrs, gotta figure last 2 or 3 yrs are "bogus" and it's likely a 10-yr deal for about $100M. Just a guess, tho.
