Shero will have to trade for a veteran or sign somebody else (like Bryan Allen). I think everybody would agree that they need help on defense NOW!
If they aren't content with solely going the FA route, who could they trade for? And who could they part with in that trade?

This is largely the reason I think Martin stays this year. I think they go with likely
Letang - Suter/replacement/D Guy
martin - Orpik
Niskanen - Engellend/Despres

tons of young d prospects to use as bait. let's hope some make it to the big club someday, but some are there for trade chips no doubt.

Maybe they try for Keith Yandle. It's been said that the pens are willing to part with Simon Despres.

I think Shero will talk Lidstrom out of retirement so he can sign here. It should be his top priority.

I think Orpik with Niskanen makes more sense (but it doesn't really matter). I would really be okay if they didn't trade Paul Martin, because the the more I think about it, the more I feel like he might have just been a talented guy who had a bad year. That said they HAVE TO get bigger and nastier on D RIGHT NOW!

I get the feeling that if he strikes out on Suter or another big name, he's going to throw the young guys to the wolves and see how they do. Honestly, the team has the leadership to make it through some growing pains and I've always believed you only get to see what a player is made out of when he is faced with extreme circumstances.

Yeah, i really think Suter isn't coming here. From everything i have heard, this guy wants to play games with the owners and in the media by saying one thing and doing another behind closed doors. Shero would have a better handle on this than nearly anyone because he worked in Nashville and he really has his finger on the pulse of that GM and franchise.
Also, I think he will want crazy money. Like, more than Parise.
I think Allen and other FA's will be brought in.

...Shero will need to realize that the defense he has now is good, he just needs a coach that will make the team play defense.
Maybe not getting Suter would be the best possible scenario.

No link to provide, but Rossi and Madden (and I think Molinari, but can't say that for certain) have both stated as much.
I don't know if he'd be included in a trade for Yandle. Rossi (again) said at the draft that the sticking point there was that the Yotes wanted a forward coming back in that trade.

I don't like Garrison because I can see the same thing happening with him as did Michalek or Martin.

Get Garrison, Suter, and Shane Doan and then win the cup.

I can't. Jason Garrison doesn't have the pedigree, but he's already proven to be significantly more physical than either of those two were in PHX and NJ resepctively.

I suppose physicality is an important aspect to what the Pens need, but the ~$5 million he is going to get doesn't seem worth the risk again. It sounds like Michalek, honestly, where we thought we were getting this defensive dynamo that blocked a million shots and was just a shutdown dude. I'm starting to think these mid-range, pigeon-holed defensemen are truly products of their environment rather than just good players.

The defense sucks....what are you watching?
We have a very very soft defense.
Martin must go no matter what.
Sign Salvador or Allen and Zanon for the bottom pair. We need physical defenseman.
