Williamsport to get FHL team, play outdoors

Postby PghSkins on Wed Jul 25, 2012 12:21 am

The town of my birth, Williamsport, PA, will become the only place where an entire home schedule will be played outdoors.

I have no idea how or if this is going to work. But, I am so going.

I had never heard of the FHL until this post. After a little Google action, I was impressed to see a 6 team league spread over the NE US.

I suspect that the weather will be a HUGE factor, but I certainly hope it works for them, it shows a serious commitment to hockey! Decent logos too.

That league is going to go down hill if it loses (lost?) Pierre Daigenais...I think he's responsible for 78% of the league's offense (not totally serious).

I lived in that area the last time they tried to get a team and the politico's pretty much did everything thing they could to chase it away. I think it was a UHL team that tried to come in.

Williamsport also had a kick ass roller hockey league that was great until a new arena director came in and decided basketball was more important, he single handedly destroyed both the adult and youth hockey program in 2 short years!

A major league team, the Spokane Canaries of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, coached by Lester Patrick, actually played a season at an outdoor rink in 1916-17. Look it up.

Gonna have some really great ice. Fitting for a league that I can't even be sure if I've ever heard of and that I certainly know nothing about.

Isn't this the same league as in Slapshot?

Edit: It isn't, same name though

Went to the game tonight, started out OK although the glass was pretty well fogged up from the get go....

Image

The second period there was no breeze and pretty heavy fog developed. Could see center ice and some at the far end, but anything behind the glass was totally obscured

Third period, the wind came, blew the fog away but made the temperature bone chilling. So, it was a nice experience to go to an outdoor game but think I'll stick to indoor in the future. Williamsport's Kevin Cooper had a hattie although needless to say nobody was motivated to lose the headgear. Final score: Williamsport 9, Danville 4, goals I actually saw go in: 3.
