Preds looking to trade for top 4 Dman - Paul Martin?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, but...

Barry Trotz was quoted yesterday saying:
“Going into training camp, we are not done adding pieces if we can add another piece, especially in a top four defense we are going to try and do that,” Trotz said later Wednesday on a conference call discussing the matching of Weber’s offer sheet. “There is limited value out there in terms of free agency, but there are guys we are looking at a possibility of a trade. There could be a piece there.”

We all know the ties between Shero and Poile...

My questions are:

1. If we send Martin to Nashville, what kind of return could we be looking at?
2. Who's realistically going to play D this year? I'm not sure the young guys are quite ready yet...

i don't really like martin, and i do think it's possible that depres will give you a better net performance than him.

but we can't trade him away without an established top 4 guy coming back. it's just too risky.

1. Depends on how badly NSH wants Martin specifically. There were rumors out there prior to Suter leaving about Poile's interest in Martin.

2. It seems they pretty much have to be at this point, especially should Martin get dealt. The top-4 is Letang, Martin, Orpik, and Niskanen. Despres, Engellend, Lovejoy, Strait, Bortuzzo, Dumoulin, and Morrow will be fighitng for the other 3 spots.

Letang, Orpik, and Niskanen + TBD would make me pretty uneasy.
There are no guarantees that Niskanen can handle the big minutes over a full season.

You're right, there aren't, but I was looking at the numbers yesterday, and what was interesting was a comparison of Niskanen to Michalek. Niskanen was just about 00:53 less TOI/game than Michalek, but Michalek played significantly more minutes/game on PK than Niskanen did...which indicates that Z was really beginning to lose out on 5-on-5 minutes in favor of Niskanen.

The latter part is why it wouldn't happen, short of NSH feeling that Klein has no intention to return in 2013-14 and beyond.

If you're looking at contending for a cup, you don't go into the season feeling good about 3 defenders. Even adding at the deadline leaves multiple players playing important minutes that haven't been with the team long.

Yeah, Capgeek says they only have 5 D on NHL contracts, surely they wouldn't consider shipping one out?! I'm no fan of Martin but don't see what the Preds could trade that would be better than just keeping him. Hornqvist? No? Sigh.

I know the Preds have no Dmen we would want - or could get - I was thinking if we shipped out Martin, then looked for a separate trade for D....for example Yandle, Bouwmeester, Edler, Boyle or whoever....just throwing some names out there
If the NHL voids the Visnovsky trade, perhaps a Ryan/Visnovsky package...I dunno, I'm just spit ballin'

I think Shero is going to have to get creative to shore up the D if we are to be any sort of threat

I guess that's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that, as bad as Michalek played at times, the coaches still wanted him killing penalties over Niskanen.
