Pens sign Forward Prospect Jayson Megna

Postby Penspal on Wed Aug 01, 2012 3:59 pm

As soon as I read this I was Jayson who.... While we didn't get Semin, we did get Megna (who gets bonus points for figuring out this little quip)

I scoured Netwolf's reports and found ONE reference for Megna on the last day (scrimmage), and it was just who was playing on this line. Not saying that he's not worth signing, but I don't think too many of the camp reports (Netwolf's and others) even mentioned him. I was hoping it was the tall dman Susjtr who got signed.

Hopefully Netwolf can chime in with any memories....

I've read from others saying that he had a decent camp, but nothing to suggest that he was a can't miss UFA that the Pens needed to sign. Worth emphasizing is that he is already 22 so gauge that against how well he may have done at a prospects camp. We'll see.

There was a rumor he was going to sign with us in the other thread a few days ago so I was scouring the web for info on him. I like it. He's a skill guy who is not afraid to drop the gloves. His numbers weren't that great last year in college (38gms, 13-18-31) but he was third on the team and only a freshman.

Glad to hear he can drop the gloves, curious he went the university route if he has that skill.

Add an S, make the n and m...... maybe I'm reaching, but every time I read his name I see it. :scared:

Shero is cornering the market on AHL talent. Maybe he found his calling.

Shero is also responsible for supplying the affiliates with talent. We need you to stay quiet now, thank you.

This puts us at the 50 contract limit, does it not, assuming Tangradi, Grant and Bortuzzo eventually sign? Say Doan is digned, when two of them sign their offers does the third become a UFA?

pretty sure grant's ceiling is in the AHL at this point. With how many D the pens have in the pool who will likely be playing in the AHL for years to come, I don't think losing him will phase anyone.

Just a reminder: players headed back to juniors do not count against the contract limit (Harrington). Grant is waiver eligible by my count, so I'm not sure what we'll do with him. We can relinquish his rights at any point if we so choose. We can do that and invite him to training camp. We can sign him to an AHL-only deal if he would accept one (I don't think I would if I were him though...)

Grant had a slower development due to some bad injuries, but with a clean bill of health he had a great year in WBS.

That said, if he manages to reach his potential, it won't be more than a 5-7 PP specialist. And since he's not there yet, I can't see any team plucking him off waivers, since the Pens would probably pick him right back up after the team that claims him sends him back down. So no way he doesn't clear IMO.

With Harrington sliding, Pens will be fine right at 50. Until they move a fringe d-man that is

Do players headed to the NCAA count? Not sure, but that doesn't seem right to count one and not the other...

Players signed to pro contracts cannot return to the NCAA, they count.

Letting go of Grant would be a huge mistake at this point. As others pointed out, he was very solid last season for WBS.

Well, the 50 contract limit is an NHL rule.

The cannot go back to the NCAA is an NCAA rule -- no professionals.

I'm not sure I'm following you here, JC, and I normally do. Under normal circumstances (loans to Europe, suspended players, etc. notwithstanding) all contracts count against the NHL's imposed 50 contract limit (part of the 90 player protected list, or reverse list). The exception is that players that fall under the slide rule (that is, 18 or 19 year old players that are returned to juniors) will not count against the 50 contract limit. As stated above, collegiate players lose their NCAA eligibility once they sign a professional contract (thus, losing "amateur" status). Signed NCAA players have to (under any ordinary course) end up in a professional league in some way, shape or form...be it NHL, AHL or ECHL...so, of course, they count.

Sidebar to the discussion, but on topic to the thread. I've dug up some footage of this kid, I'm mildly impressed. Something I haven't really said or felt with other undrafted free agents that we've tried recently (or came close to, like that Russian kid from the USHL from last year). I like his skating, he has that "pro burst", he works really well on his edges, protects the puck pretty well, he'll initiate some contact, pretty good release, can get the puck up in a hurry, definitely seems like a shooter...not sure about his vision, seems to be a bit of a DIYer...I want to hear from a couple contacts on the kid and watch a little more of whatever I can find, but I'm not scoffing at this kid so quickly like some of the others...

^Just elaborating on this. NCAA rule that they can't play in college once signing a pro contract. I got ya.
