The opinion on the Crosby deal is certainly valid. I don't agree with it, but its not even that rare an opinion.

I agree that 5 or 6 year contracts should be the preferred limit.
I don't worry about Sid's health because I am 99% convinced that was a misdiagnosed neck injury, not a prolonged concussion.

B.I.N.G.O.
Or we can hope at the very least.
Also, as was mentioned.... the contract would have some sort of insurance. The cost of insuring Sid's contract was likely one of the reasons that Sid did not get more than 8.7 M avg per year.

Reports say the pens were not able to insure Sid's contract. Lemiuex and Burkle are on the hook for it for the next 12 years regardless.

Not entirely true, from what I read a few months back. They said that Sid will have to go through a full season without any head-related issues, then they can get it insured in small bunches (like 1-3 seasons at a time).

I got no problem with a 10 year contract, but it should have a escape clause for the owners, past 5 years. After 5 year at the end of every season they should be able to decide weather to keep it going or end it. But if they don;t honor it they can't resign them to a lower contract.
It would just be nice knowing you can keep a franchise player his whole career or a good portion of his glory years with the same team.

Just make every player get paid his cap hit every season. This takes away the loaded fron contracts that is a loophole in the cap (which Crosby's isnt... they plan on him playing all of those seasons).

I hate non-guaranteed contracts. Isn't that an oxymoron actually?

Wouldn't you still be "guaranteed" your $8.7 mil cap hit, if you were Sid?

also, you don't reward your franchise player and cup winner with a raw deal just because he has some injury problems...

You don't do this for two reasons: 1) It's simply wrong. 2) If you don't reward him properly, someone else will.
