What was the first album/song you downloaded illegally?

For me, it was Jimmy Page/Black Crowes Live at the Greek Theater via Napster. One. Song. At. A. Time. Every track had a different bitrate and level...so two songs would blare and others would be very low. Good times.

Wow, now that's a way back. I can't even think of what it was. Was Napster the first downloader? I remember going from Napster, to Morpheus, to Kazaa, and then Limewire.

Honestly can't remember what album or song I first downloaded. It was a great time to discover new music though!

I think mine was Enjoy The Silence, and the second was a Rage Against The Machine song. It ended up taking me about a month to get the entire Violator CD. By the time I was finished, I had 4 different remixes of Enjoy The Silence, 3 mixes of World In My Eyes, a few more for Personal Jesus. And like Digitalgypsy said, the volumes and quality were all over the place.

My downloading started by dogpiling for mp3s. I eventually moved on to FTP sites with ratios, where you had to give a song to get a song. There was a website that listed a ton of FTP sites, and I'm drawing a blank on it (audiosurf.com?, audiofind.com?) I can't count how many people I sent Descendents - All to. If I needed to upload a second song, they got "Descendents - All, no All!" 8-)

There was also audiogalaxy, which I think might have even been around before Napster.

I think my first was something by Saves The Day. I remember my friends dad would pay me $15 per CD to download him songs and burn stuff for him.

I remember a friend of mine sending me a screenshot from audiogalaxy with a 22kb/s download. I couldn't believe it until he sent me the screen shot.

I remember when broadband first came in and you could click on a song and bam it would download in like 20 seconds. It was sick.

You'd be surprised. He was quite prolific. You know rule 34? Well rule 35 is "if it exists, there is a Wesley Willis song of it"
