The oxygen countdown really put things into perspetive, if he doesn't get to land in under 10 minutes he would pretty much be dead.
He needed the oxygen during the free fall because there was little oxygen in the air (plus the temperature, pressure, etc.). Once he got out of free fall (6000 ft in this instance?), he could have breathed on his own.
Once you cross ~62,000 feet, you are going over Armstrong's Line. And without pressurization, if you stay over that line for more than a couple minutes you aren't coming back across it alive no matter how much oxygen you have at your disposal. The pressure drops so low at that altitude that he water in your lungs and saliva will begin to boil. And that totally sucks.
